Brad here from the Hudson Valley region of NY. Getting geared up to buy my first house, and as soon as that happens, whammo, smoker town! I think the WSM is on my desire list, 22.5 model. But my ego says "get the big ole offset because it's big and looks badass and would need a few dollars in upgrades" I suppose it's part of the "addiction"

Congratulations on your first home!!! I have an off set and love it, but you have to keep an eye on it, the WSM is pretty much a set it and almost forget it. Depends on what you want, both will turn out good que.

Welcome from Sennett in CNY!

Congrats on the prospect of a new home.  You don't memntion which offset you're looking at.  They come in all flavors of ease of ue and quality but it's darn hard to find fault with a WSM.....

I was looking at an Oklahoma Joe. Would require more work than I wanna put into a unit during a renovation and expense prone time in the house owning process.

Good luck on the projects.  We have a  seven bedroom 130 year old farmhouse.  After we bought the farm for the next 15 years we did what we could afford each year.  For most of that time my projects had projects.

I hear that. The first project is moving, then we have some minor repairs to the house to do. Chimney needs a rebuild, and possibly some new appliances (washer and dryer) and run a new hookup to the top floor. Running the pipes and drains, venting to the outside, running a secondary condenser for an attic air handler with ports in each room on the second floor ect....

All projects I can do, but time consuming and relatively expensive

Your probably better off with a WSM than a cheap offset.

If you buy an offset make sure the steel is thick, 1/4" is good.

Hey there! I'm in Poughkeepsie and am picking up my first smoker - a WSM 18.5 tomorrow. I think I am going to try a pork shoulder this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes! Congrats on your new home!
