My brother and I decided to slaughter our own hogs this year. It all went down last Saturday. Built a walk-in refer at my brothers for hanging. Got some help from a friend and hunting partner. By the 4th hog, we got our time down pretty good. We skinned them rather than scrape. But the skinning was the hardest part and most time consuming. Otherwise, was pretty straight forward just like any other large game. One of the hogs is mine, but I get the honors of doing all the curing and smoking. :rolleyes:

Please tell me you kept some skin for cracklins? Ya can't have a proper hog slaughter without fresh cracklins.
And you processed the heads, yes?
Cheeks, tongues and brains?

An honest days work with awesome rewards, nice.
I guess for you the real work now begins.
 
Thanks Boykjo. Been tempted to do that for a long time. Glad we did. The experience was fulfilling and certainly rewarding.
 
Well Chile... Truth be told... I have been saving up a lot of skin off my store bought bellies that need made up. I would have liked to have kept these, but that wasn't in the cards this time around. Heads- yes! Mostly for the Jowls. Dunno so much about the brains and tongues.... Did keep the other offal though.
 
I hear you Chile. That stuff does go into grind for our home made dog food though, just so you know it doesn't go to waste. Yes... Our dogs actually eat better than we do.

Yes. That worked perfect for catching it all and not stepping in it. … and as long as none of us nicked a gut or ruptured a bladder, or busted a bile.

We also had a LOT of yellow jackets and a few bald faced hornets invade our party. Those didn't bother us as they were pretty intent on getting a snack, and a better than FLIES.
 
Good job now the enjoyment of your work. After the cure process. As said head to tail only left on a pig is the squealer.
Here in the East we make scrapple out of the other parts no dog food here.

Nice! If you don't mind me asking, what was the dispatch method of the hogs?

I don't get a chance to slaughter any but if I can come across a live trapped wild/feral hog my plan is the non-toxic CCI Copper 22LR round behind the eye. No lead dispersion at all this way :)
 
Used an old Springfield over and under. Yes the round was a 22LR copper hollow point. Between the eyes, but a little higher- halfway between the eyes and ears. Its a pretty small target on a hog. That put them down immediately, but used a very long sticking knife straight in from the collar to cut the jugular and aorta. They bleed out real good that way and fast.
 
Thanks for the input. I have have a few different options for dispatch. If not keeping head or neck (feral hogs have like no neck) then I think I am leaning towards the 300 Blackout with powder coated cast lead bullets and placement about an inch behind the ear.. That would do the trick suuuuuuuuper cheap.
 
Ahh, the reaping the benefits of your work. Looks good. You are the second person in a week to post carrots...I love cooked carrots. Just gonna have to add them to my Labor Day weekend smoke. Never tried before.
