My wife gets up at 3 AM if her phone rings and heads out to help her friends on their ranch or farm if they are in a pickle and need help fast. Could be anything, name it, those girls have done it.

Her phone rang early yesterday and her GF's were all heading to the opening day at the Amazon Fresh Produce Store at dawn. Off she went.

She swiped her CC on the way into the store and simply put items she wanted into the shopping cart and that was that. Somehow it was automagically charged to her CC and she wheeled the cart back out to the truck and came back home.
No checker, no self check out, just plug and play.

Had pretty much everything a regular Grocery store would have I'm told.

Amazon had reps there and the girls got lots of free stuff for being the first to use the place and system. Cookies, gift certs, chits, food, gizmos and other "stuff."

Said she liked it.

On a side note, the last time I went to SAMS I used their scan and go via the app. I loved it. Sounds like the Amazon store is right down my alley too.

Watch out.....could get hacked in the app........so said in another post
That's what I would worry about. Maybe use a prepaid visa? Is there any info on them a hacker could steal?

Or does that mean I'm getting older and don't like change lol. Maybe just too much of small town living! But on the other hand I can see the convenience...because everytime I'm ready to check out at the grocery store so is everyone else.

I don't think it's convenience driving this but an attempt to control theft. This works because you only get in the door by establishing your identity and credit-worthiness. You're thereafter being tracked by camera the whole time you're in the store, perhaps not by human "spies" but by human-programmed computers, so that if you did slip something in your pocket you'd run into some resistance somewhere, probably just by seeing it show up on your list of billed goods.

Personally I'm OK with this amount of "loss of freedom" if theft loss is truly making a >10% effect on prices. But everything now-a-days seems to become political and controversial quickly--witness another recent thread here on steaks being locked up like expensive champagne. (Although it did appear folks were, by page 3 or 4, turning back to a more cordial, humorous approach to each other--good on us!) And I don't want that happening to this thread, although I am curious how folks feel about such tracking in "brick and mortar" business, particular those that seem to live in states without much of a theft problem.

But I think it's illustrating the modern trend that everything is "going on your permanent record". The days of moving to another community (or country!) and getting a "fresh start" (assuming you might have sowed a few wild oats before but are wanting to "turn over a new leaf") are probably gone. Although I do think there can be a technical approach to having some degree of "redemption" and "2nd chances"...we just have to agree on the algorithm. :emoji_sunglasses:

My problem with this and things like it is that I like to pick out the meat, veggies, and some other things that I'm buying. I doubt the person filling the order for you is as concerned about getting one that meets your expectations. If the stores are worried about theft maybe they should take out all those self check out lanes I highly doubt everybody using them is scanning every item. With that said I also refuse to use the self check out I don't and never have desired to be a check out person. There's nothing wrong with being a check out person it's just not something I've wanted to do. Does anybody else remember when a certain chain store started business they had a pledge that if there were more than x number of people (I think it was 3) they would open a new lane.
Yes I'm old and don't like some things to change

Yes! That sound so cool! I love a lot of the new technology.

We've been using self checkout at Sam's for over a year. We do have to scan the items with our phone as we purchase them but we get to skip the checkout line when leaving. Just a quick scan of our QR code when leaving, quick check of our basket by the door attendant, and we're headed to the car. I love it.

You do pick out your own stuff. When you toss it in your cart, a camera logs it. If you change your mind and put the item back on the shelf, the camera logs that, too. I saw a video on these Amazon checkerless stores a couple years ago. I don't know if I agree or disagree with the concept, but they had some testers doing a video, and it worked like it was supposed to.

I'm not sure if it is needed everywhere, but overall a good concept, especially for bigger cities. By in large, in most public places, we are already under surveillance and in any brick and mortar store too. Im not saying I like it, I also see where it can go dystopian quickly (reference China's social credits and state surveillance), but it is a fact now. If its a good or bad thing will depend on the day, person, experience and era.

As a matter of protection never use an ATM or check card, I try to keep mine at home. Your credit card is insured and protected so if you dispute a charge the company automatically takes it on and you are off the hook. If it's your Checking card you don't have the same protection. There has been two times in the last year that my Credit Card was charged and each time, in one 5 minute phone call I moved on with my life. Also, you can lock you and your children's social security number to avoid identity theft. It was free, may be one time processing of a few bucks now. When you need to have a credit run, you just call and unlock for the review for credit, then lock again.

For online shopping or anything like this , I have a separate account and card to go with it . Only keep enough in the account to cover a purchase . Can't wipe me out that way .

OK I misread it didn't see where you do put it in the cart so it would be better than the online order and then pick up thing.

I love that app. I not a plus member and using the app I can still shop early. I also make sure it right. I was at my local Mexican market this week and after walked out the door see she charged me twice for a $4 sour cream. I just said heck with it and went on.
