Well, I just learned the hard way that I need to invest in a lock for my freezer out in the garage.

The 10 year old went out to put some popsicles away on Tuesday and left it sitting WIDE open, ruining about $200 worth of meats. From now on, I'm the only one allowed in that freezer and he'll be doing chores for about a month to pay us back for the $200 worth of beef, chicken and pork he ruined.

Good god. No smoking this weekend.......I think I'm going to be sick.

Well, I wouldn't trade the kids for $200 worth of meat, but I might be willing to whoop one for it. LOL

Lesson learned, locks are going on the freezer this weekend and I'll begin the process of re-stocking my meats. He gets PB & J for the next three or four months though

Go easy on him he did not mean to do it...but I know where you are coming from...lol...When my daughter was 7 she broke a 5 gal carboy full of wine that was 2 years old and I was going to bottle it that weekend. She was scared to death for me to come home. When I got home she was so scared that I just told her it was ok and I went into the bedroom and beat my head into the wall...

Take it from someone who has had a freezer in the garage for nearly 30 yrs. Things happen. I keep mine locked after every use now. I've had at least 3 melt downs when the closed door popped open after closing or someone thought they closed it well. It can happen at any age.

Ummm, sorry to hear about your loss,

...uhhh could I say something? I know it's none of my business, ...I was a problem child, always doing dumb stuff and getting into trouble, always making the old man's blood boil, he would react much the same way you are,

...then when I would visit my best friend, his dad had already been told about the 'dumb' thing I had done, well, he would scrub my head and in a light hearted tone say, "well knuckle head, what lesson did you learn?" I'd bow my head in shame, tears flowing down my cheeks and tell him, and he would reply with, "well then, it wasn't all bad, something good did come out of it, you have learned a lesson for when you are a man."

Then, because he delivered ice cream to the stores and his freezer was well stocked, he would go to the freezer and give me an ice cream bar.

The point is, my father taught me an eye for an eye and set a standard so high, being perfect and never making a mistake, that for years I tried but could never attain and expected others to too,

...my best friend's dad taught me grace, acceptance and unmerited favor when I mess up, he was right, it was a lesson I finally put into practice and have been using for along time now when others make 'dumb' mistakes.

Just my two cents,

Gene

I would invest in a temp alarm for the freezer out there that way if its left open you will know about it. Shouldnt cost more than 20-30 bucks.

Hey look at it this way it was your 10 year old it was my wife that didn't close the freezer well

We now have a freezer in the garage with temp and door alarms and the freezer she didn't close tight is now at my camp doing just fine. I tried to ground her but that didn't work so well

Yes I have heard of that happening here a few times and it never comes out very good. I think the last one was Joel (Solar Yellow) that also lost a bunch of good eating meat too. Now it hurts the wallet and the smokes that you missed too. Now the alarm is starting to sound pretty darn good for I have 3 freezers in the garage slap full of meat too.

that stinks but go easy on him, it could have happened to anyone no matter what age. s happens, and a lesson will be learned from it.

Around this neck of the city woods most 10 yr olds are junior gang member inductees shoplifting $200 worth of products to score $20 in crack to prove their worthiness; when I catch 'em doing it the parents usually fork out about $2,000 in court and lawyer fees to get them out of it if they have money; if not, they let 'em go thru juvie court, get their wrist slapped and send 'em back out on the street to 'do it right' the next time without getting caught.
At 10 years old if that's the worst thing he's done then get down on your knees and thank your lucky stars, give him a big hug and kiss your wife and tell her what a great son you have. Many parents by then have already incurred $10,000 or more in lawyer fees just to get him reinstated back into the school he tried to burn down...

not that it is my business......
but how do you punish yourself when you make a mistake?

now if this has happened before, that is a different story

one time i had a freezer full of deer meat in the garage and someone decided they needed to use the outlet that the freezer was plugged into ,and then didnt plug it back in .luckly i caught it in time.so i invited a bunch of people over and i grilled all of the deer meat.i felt like it was the best thing to do at the time.

1st thing i do when i get another freezer is call the maker and ask if the drill points i plan to use are ok. If so i install a heavy hasp and pad lock.
My freezers are out side under the carport and i don't want to make it easy for some thug to walk up and help themselves.
never used to worry about it till hurricane katrina hit and i lost everything in 2 freezers . Homeowners told me to come up w/ a value and they would pay. Once i added it up i freaked out at how much $$$ two freezers would hold .
Now bothe have power and temp alarms and locks.
