Maybe the Mods can get Admin to take a look it sure would not be a bad thing to have both.
I don't do Facebook, Twitter or any of that stuff so I never used Likes.
But If I see a worthwhile post I give it a like, that's why we should have both.
Points for well done and informative post and Likes for ?? whatever

I posted a bit of a rant on this very subject quite a while ago and was told there was no way Points were coming back.
To this day I continue to give a POINT if I feel a post deserves it. To deserve it (my guidelines) a post must be well done and informative.
I DO NOT give likes. IMO, likes don't mean s**t.
Gary

But Gary... why don't you tell us how you really feel?
LOL! (Oh, that's Laughing Out Loud, just to clear up anybody wondering...)

PS: I almost gave you a "Like" for honesty, but didn't want to offend you.

Looks to me like SMF is in flux.
I've belonged to some forums where too many, wanted too many specialized divisions. And it gets way out of hand, and makes it way too burgeoning and cumbersome to find things do to the fracturing of information.
Along with the overgrowth, interest wains because of how hard it becomes to wonder through the forest of changes. Many of which become stagnant.
Anyone looked at the stagnant veins here lately?

Points meant little and likes are worth less. KIDS have reduced the written word to text abbreviations, memes and piles of S#!T emojis! Kids give Likes to any pointless BS a Friend or relative posts. Is it really meaningful, helpful or valuable to post that Billy was at the mall talking to Lisa while his baby momma Chrissy was in the bathroom with morning sickness from being pregnant with Gino's baby? Is that something worth giving a like?

A few WORDS of praise, or a THANKS for your help is how ADULTS communicate and is worth a Thousand Points and Ten Thousand Likes. In my opinion, both points and likes should be dropped and if You do a great job, I'll take the time to tell you so...JJ

Actually, the US Government started first letter abbreviations way back. I remember when TVA bought the 95 square miles of Uranium claims the company I was working for in Wyoming held, in the 1970's.
TVA is Government shorthand for Tennessee Valley Authority. ;)

OK, everybody carry on. Life's full of choices.
I guess I'll choose to go sand dry wall mud....
Oh Joy! Oh Rapture!

I say get rid of both of them, as JJ says if you do something good I will tell you, if you help me I will thank you. In the old system I valued the points I got from people that I helped with something, just like Bear & his step-by steps. When someone has a successful smoke following Bears steps, then when Bear gets a point for that , I'm sure it makes him feel good. Well lets just eliminate the likes & points & just say Thank-you!!

Al I know you'll tell someone - as will a lot of other members, but there are still quite a few members that choose only to like something and not comment.

Not a bad idea Al. I could live with that a whole lot better than I can with all these Facebook likes.
If we do keep the "Likes" then there should also be an "Are you stupid" and a "i really hate this" button too.
Gary

I can see the sparks just a flying. I'd prefer to go back to limiting the number of likes one can give out on a given day. I think it used to be 10.

My wife participates on a few ladies forums and is amazed by some of the crazy or ignorant mean stuff people post. She feels a " SLAP APP " would be useful for those times people are so over the top, you just want to reach out and Touch someone!...JJ

LOL---How can you say the things I underlined & highlighted, and then say "Eliminate them Both".

I say keep them both:
The Points for giving to people who show an outstanding meal or Smoke, or for showing how to do something, or for answering a question, etc, etc.

And I guess the Likes would be good so people can make believe they're on the useless Facebook Thing.

BTW: Everything was Fine when all we had was Points on the Old Platform, and it seemed like everybody knew how to use it properly.

The reason I say keep them both, is because the few months of "Likes" we've had probably dumbed many of us down to not being able to use Points the way we used to, prior to the Platform change.

People get and give likes now for whatever they want, just like Facebook or wherever else . No points.. only likes. Like a post or a comment. Like a pic.. no more points. That's all gone. It's up to each of us to like whatever we like to like. :D
Maybe featured posts are the real goal now.
Helping people counts most though :p

I wasn’t around long enough to get a good grasp of points, before they turned to likes. I happen to think of likes as more of a polite gesture of acknowledgement, and certainly not Facebook-esque, but that’s just me.

I am still treating them the same. I think there for a short time before the new software, we all became obsessed with points. It was like they were a mark of recognition, the one with the most had to be the best. Groups of friends would actually make sure you knew they posted so they would get their points, to the point of sending E-mails and asking for them . You could obtain 100 in a two week period easily if you obsessed about it. And a lot of us at that time were. The new software and the points actually lead to me taking a break. Well and real life was beating me down.

Now I realize that the one with the most points, doesn't even get a free bag of charcoal. In my humble opinion, its a sign respect, because of your knowledge, your willingness to explore new boundaries, to offer assistance,
to put yourself out there for yourself or others. Its just another part of the forum. And its what it is to you.

If you did away with 'em, it wouldn't hurt my feelings. As long as they are here, I am still treating them as I did in the past. I'll always give the first attempt at something a point when I notice it. Even when you screw up, sometimes you still deserve a point for trying.

So mark me down as indifferent.

Bottom line, Likes do not replace points. These are two different things and unfortunately, we just don't have a point system right now.

The old system was custom and it had a lot of things that most of us liked, some things not so much. Unfortunately, the custom setup went away and we were forced to find something that was already built. It's like the difference between building your house with all of your special nooks and crannies that you need and want vs. buying one already built and just adjusting to it.

I spent weeks looking and trying out different systems and this one, Xenforo, was the one that had the most options like what we were used to. There is no point system built into it but there may be a plugin available. A plugin is like an app on a phone that you install and it lets you do things you couldn't do otherwise

The problem with plugins is it adds lots of extra code and extra weight to the site and makes the pages load just a little slower.

For this reason we have to be pretty choosy about what we add and what we don't. Xenforo has a new version available and I don't know if it has the point system or not but we will most likely be upgrading sometime this year.

I too liked the points so hopefully we can bring them back eventually.

For now, a "Like" is comparable to a friendly smile, a wave or a pat on the back. They are endless in supply and can be given out anytime you have half a reason. It makes people feel good, new members feel welcomed and it 's just an all 'round nice thing to do.

Yeah.. help from or by people should get as much credit. You get an OTBS recognition for being a great help to the members.
Anyone want to trade likes? :D

It's all good..
What is this OTBS recognition that you speak? ;) I think that is gone with the points!

Watch out Gary. You'll get a letter in your inbox.
What about a whole bunch of the stuff like in in the text section of a smart (or in my case: A Smarter-than-me..) Phone.
We'd have more than enough good stuff to exhibit. I even found one with the middle finger extended.
It would be great for when somebody gives you a, "Are you stupid".

Just to make sure, let me say before I post: This is tongue in cheek humor. Before anyone takes it wrong.

(I think I need a disclaimer in my signature... )

Sounds good, Jeff.
You've been running things Great up to this point. No reason to think that will change.
Keep up the Good Work.

Thanks,

OTBS, Order of the Thin Blue Smoke, is managements recognition that a member has been active over a year, has demonstated their ability and knowledge of smoking meat, and/or sausage making, curing and outdoor cooking. The candidate must be friendly, welcoming to newbies, use their knowledge to teach others and supports SMF's mission and values.
Once a year or so, Candidates are nominated by staff members and if approved by upper management are inducted into the ranks of OTBS and receive the OTBS Banner under their avatar that lets members know you can be trusted to be helpful and give safe and correct instruction...JJ

That was sarcasm JJ, I guess it doesn't translate well.
