Find some decent hot dogs and a bamboo skewer. Thread the skewer long ways through the hot dog, then, with  a sharp knife and on a cutting board cut AWAY from yourself at a 45 degree angle. Remove the skewer -- spiral cut hot dogs! Heck of a lot more surface area. If you've got some kids/relatives over for the 4th they may not be (forgive me) worth serving great food to, but this will probably float their boats!!! Ribs are probably bad for kids anyway...

After you cut them, but before you grill 'em up, spritz with canola oil spray (or Pam) and toss a little rub on them! Just enough spray to make the rub stick is all you want.  Comes out great.

I did the spiral cut once after seeing it in Jeff's newsletter.  They were kinda hard to manage on the grill grate so I placed them on those disposable grill mats from the grocery store.  Much easier to deal with.  And you're right, a little oil and rub sends them over the top.

I do the spiral cut dog for the younger grand kids. A number of years ago Ma Dutch found a stainless steel grill top hot dog roller and picked one up. That's what I use to grill the spiral cut dogs-no worries about them hanging up on the grill. I'll post up a picture of it when I'm on the home 'puter.

I do the spiral cuts by hand, the skewer idea makes em too deep and they break on the grill, for me anyhow.

My daughter used to put half a dog (lengthwise) on a bun, said it was too much meat using a whole dog, since I have been spiral cutting them, she places the whole dog on the roll now.

Plus the spiral dogs hold the condiments and cheese much better.

Dutch, love the roller, I have a 21 dog roller that I use for the concession at track meets and scouting events. At home, if not grilling I will place dogs in a fry pan (non-spiral cut) with a few ounces of water and roll around while cooking until all liquid is cooked off and the dogs get sweaty, there is something about rolled dogs that are so good.

Cool !!!

Reminds me of the hot dog rollers they had at stop & go places. I think "7-11" and "Turkey Hill" still have them.

Lynn found one of these last year at Wally World....(Wal-Mart) and bought it.  Works and keeps them from burning!

Did this and ended up with a cut finger. Luckily, the glass of scotch I had nearby was a good disinfectant.Lessons learned? Always have scotch around when handling sharp knives.

It wasn't a single malt glennfiddich per chance?
Bite your tongue, sir!!!!  Single malts are only good for one thing...drinking!

I do the spiral dogs with bbq rub a lot!!!  Big hit, except they give Steph (my wife) terrible heartburn....sorry babe.

She loves them but just can't eat 'em.

Also, I smoke those bad boys at 225 for about 1.5 to 2 hours with some Pitmaster's choice from Todd Johnson!  That makes them totally awesome!
