Probably wouldnt hurt, i know for the longest time when i stored my mes30 outside, i just had a grill cover which i Bungie strapped around it but since these are electic smokers, i think its best to store them in a shed or garage so there isn't a chance for water getting to the Electronics or small animals chewing the cords

I'm not sure if the 40 will fit, but you can always put a plastic trash bag over the MES to keep the elements out. Simple and inexpensive. Sorry I couldn't really answer you question.

Walmart has 30" diameter all black grill covers that come down to the chip loader hole < $10. Thicker than a garbage bag and Weber makes a 28" diameter or so that fit the Mes 40". I like the bottom 1/3 open to breathe and my smoker doesn't get rain soaked.

gmc has a very good point. A trash bag will keep the moisture out of the electronics, but I take it one step further & use a generic smoker cover over the plastic bag. I have a 9 year old MES that has been sitting in the Florida weather (think afternoon storms in the summer) with that setup & it still works just fine. If you do use a 40 cover, eventually it will leak & you will need the garbage bag under it too.

I think he lives in Italy or beyond. I don't know if WalMart expanded that far yet.

When I bought my MES 30 at Lowe's (A big box home improvement store chain here) They had smokers, but no covers.
So after I set mine up on some bricks to give it underside ventilation, I took the box, (which I thoughtfully had opened from the bottom) and slide it down over my MES 30, with an appropriately large plastic trash bag over it.
I folded the box flaps into the box so it can slide down over the smoker, and the plastic trash bag makes a rain jacket for it.
So far, so very good.
And I have John McLemore's smilin face on my custom Built MES 30 Sm00ker cover. Dad Gum, That's Good!

I've since noticed my local Lowe's has generic 21" X 21" X 33" tall
(Mostly, because I beached them out for having smokers, but no covers at the time I bought mine.)

I removed my chip loader when covering mine. Now I only use my Mod to feed in smoke, and it easily unplugs from the chip feeder hole so the John McLemore Smiling Face Custom Made Sm00ker Box Cover slides down over the Sm00ker.
Because of the brick under it's toes, the JMSFCMSBC stays spaced up from the patio. And the Plastic trash bag hangs beyond the box and keeps it dry. But air still ventilates under it.
The quite obvious answer? The damn thing should come with a cover.

Since you got the Optional Extra cold sm00ker attachment, maybe an Oklahoma Joe's Bandera cover can do for you. But it will be a bit sloppy big. Chow!;)

Update:

And BAM! I went and got one of those 21x21x33 and it's nice.
A tad roomy on the 19" MES but good. And a 2 year warranty.
I still saved the JMSFCMSBC Styrofoam insert for the top, and I put a small boat buoy (~8") on the top of my MES 30 to dome the square top for drainage.
And it still affords breathing room.
So I'm a happy camper.

I use a regular MES cover on my MES 40, but mine is under roof, and only gets wind-blown snow on it a couple times a year.
I don't think the regular cloth MES cover is good for being rained on, and I don't think they make a cover that is designed to fit over both the MES & the cold smoker.

I would think a decent waterproof tarp would be good to bungee over it, because a trash bag would get holes in it too easy & often.

I have this cover from Brightent that I bought for my 40"MBS and it fits over the cold smoker attachment. Don't know if the make one for the 30" or not. Trying to attach an Amazon link but don't know if that will work. If not, search for brightent.

The covers made by MES are so badly made that mine lasted less than nine months before it completely fell apart. Click on the following link for details:

Masterbuilt Covers Badly Made

Bottom line: do NOT get the Masterbuilt covers.

I got this cover for my MES:

Classic Accessories 55-046-042401-00 Hickory Heavy Duty Square Smoker Cover, Large

Search through their other covers and see if you can find one that will be big enough for your accessory. This one is big enough that it probably fits the MES 40 (I have the MES 30).

That MES cover is the same one I've been using for 8 years, and is only faded.
No holes or tears anywhere.
I would never put it out in the rain, but it's been holding up good to the UV rays & putting it on & off hundreds of times.

Hmmm ... You bought it eight years ago? I wonder if they used to make a better quality cover back then?

In that link I provided above, which goes to the post where I reviewed the MES cover, if you read the comments I got from other people in that thread, many of them described the same thing: it fell apart in less than one year.

It wasn't just my own, isolated experience.

Maybe they don't make them as good as they did 8 years ago, but like I said "Mine get very little rain or snow on them because it's under roof", and only gets wind-blown Precip', and it only gets Direct Sun during the Winter, and only on 3 sides.
I would never trust this one to be actually sitting out in the rain.

The one I bought yesterday is the same material as the other BBQ covers on the shelf.
And very much the same material as the cover that came with my Brinkman Smoke N Grill charcoal burner. Which is ancient, and has been re-purposed to a primary cover for my telescope mount, which lives under a 32 gallon plastic trash can. (And has for going on 3 years so far.) They are wide open on the bottom for breathing and keeping things dry.

Bulleted points:
  • Heavy duty premium cover

  • 18 mil thickness polyester fabric with sun fade protective liner

  • 2 Year warranty
Anyway, it's good stuff, in my experiences. And often out-lasts the things they cover. It protected my MES 30 from .32" of rain last night.
So far, so good... And two more storms coming.
I like rain, it's the only time my truck gets washed.:)

Here is a link to the 3,214 reviews on Amazon of the Masterbuilt MES cover:

Amazon MES Cover Reviews

What I find fascinating is the contradiction between the high number of stars given in the review compared to what is actually said in the "first page" reviews, i.e., the ones which have gotten the most votes (including my review, which you'll see on the first page of those 3,000+ reviews ;)).

All of those "first-page" reviews mention the cheap material, and the poor construction quality (the stitching).

The review I like the best is the very first one which, rather amusingly, points out that the instructions which come with the cover include this warning:

THIS PRODUCT IS INTENDED FOR INDOOR HOUSEHOLD USE ONLY

From what Bear is saying, that is almost how he has used it, because he keep the smoker indoors when the weather is getting bad (I do the same thing, even with my better cover because the MES electronics are very poorly protected from the elements).

So, if used as recommended in the instructions, it appears the cover does indeed last a long time.

This reminds me of my thirty-year-old car: I never drive it, and it doesn't give me a lick of trouble.

I don't know where you got that---Neither my Smoker, my electronics, nor my cover has ever been indoors since I got them.

My front porch has a roof over it, but that's not indoors. It still gets wet during rain or snow if the wind is blowing in the right direction, especially one of our many NorEasters. I even keep it tied down because of all the wind it gets here on the mountain.

Sorry about not understanding your post. You said "under roof" and it turns out that is a term used in real estate and elsewhere to mean indoors, as you can see in this link:

"under roof" synonyms

Also, in your earlier post you said you never put it (the MES) out in the rain. I figured that had to mean indoors because, at least where I live, putting it under a porch roof is not going to keep it dry, because we regularly get 50+ mph winds with our rain.

So, sorry if I got it wrong. I wasn't trying to cause problems.
