I'm active duty Navy and our First Class Association decided on doing a fund raiser for ourselves.  I through out the idea of smoking some butts and sell pulled pork sandwiches, corn on the cob, and drink.  It was voted and I began the commitment.  Long story short, we sold 4 of 5 12lbs butts today and cleared over $500 profit!  We still have one more wrapped and stowed in the cooler to sell to the night shift...I've had about 30 people want to know where to buy a smoker like mine (UDS), when I tell them I built it, they say "I want one!" lol!  No time for that though...Started smoking these @ 8pm last night here at work and my brothers took shifts watching it until today when I got back in.  Just felt like braggin a bit!

Welcome and Way to go ThrottleJunkie1!  Congratulations on a great idea that was obviously well done.

Thanks for your service, and a great idea for a fund raiser!

Thank you and your welcome to all above!  I'm more than proud to do it.  Hit the half way point last year so gotta stick with it to do the 20+.  I could talk about my job(s) all day long but this I had to share lol!  The night shift sale didn't go as we hoped do to over commitments and lack of manpower but we all still cleared very well.  I was hoping for a break even scenerio because we has to buy all the other "bulk" stuff because there was none i.e. sodas, plates, napkins, cutlery, foil, bla bla bla....but still people kept rolling in for seconds, thirds, forths.....

The 55 gallon UDS did 4 12lb butts with only 1 grate (never finished installing the 2nd one below it).  Took 14+ hours to get them to 190-195 degrees and smelled up the whole base @ NAS Jacksonville haha!  I did the 5th one here at home on my brinkman to have ready when we started.

Again, Congrats on the fundraiser. And a big THANK YOU for your service to this great country. My son-in-law returned unscathed from the Afgan-Pakistan border just 2 weeks ago. I am proud of the uniforms you wear...

Congrats on the fund raiser, and the successful smoke.  Also on reaching the half way point.  I am retired Army, 37 years of military.  Thank you for your service.  Steve

I will add my congrats and thanks as well. And by the way, they say it ain't braggin' if it's true!

Love the comments!!!  You guys a a great group of people!  Love this forum...better than the auto forums I'm on!

How much did you charge?  I am thinking about doing something similar to raise funds for my sons Boy Scouts trip.  What all went into the planning there?
We charged $5.00 for a loaded sandwich, corn on the cob, and a drink (water or soda).  The initial investment was steep having to buy all the plates, napkins, foil, trays, charcoal, wood, and food, but the end profit was substantial compared to the total cost.  We started smoking @ 8pm the night prior and they were all ready by 10am the next morning.  The smoke affect (aroma) drew in alot of customers as well.

Great job! I just want to remind anyone thinking about doing this type of thing to be Safe. Keep the meat you are selling over 140*F at all times. It's no fun having a whole bunch of Sick people around...JJ
