Premium, which is the only thing I can burn in my car is $5.20 at Chevron, and a buck cheaper across the street at the AM/PM. At Chevron they have big signs letting people know 25% of the cost of gas is paid in taxes.

Just did an internet search. California has the highest gas tax rate in the nation. I don't know where they get the 90 cents per gallon listed at the bottom. I'm seeing $1.19, without state and local sales tax (9.75%).

Breakdown of California Gas Taxes and Fees (2025)

The excise tax is only one component of the total price drivers pay at the pump. The full cost per gallon also includes federal taxes, state and local sales taxes, and other environmental fees.

  • State Excise Tax: 61.2 cents per gallon. This tax is adjusted annually for inflation every July and primarily funds road and highway maintenance.
  • Federal Excise Tax: 18.4 cents per gallon.
  • State and Local Sales Taxes: An average of 4 percent, though the rate varies slightly by locality.
  • Other Programs/Fees:
    • Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS): This program requires fuel suppliers to reduce emissions and adds costs per gallon, estimated by various sources to be between 5-8 cents (according to the Governor's office) or as high as 65 cents per gallon (according to other estimates).
    • Cap-and-Trade Program: This market-based program also adds costs, estimated to be around 30 cents per gallon.
    • Underground Storage Tank Fee: Approximately 2 cents per gallon.
When all taxes and regulatory fees are combined, the total amount attributed to taxes and environmental programs in California is approximately 90 cents per gallon, as of March 2025 data

The state of Oregon is trying to emulate California's taxation, fee and intrusion mania. Not just fuel but in all aspects of our daily activities. I do believe Oregon may finally be waking up. It took only 2 or 3 weeks to gather enough signatures to force a ballot measure challenging an incredible slate of upcoming new and increased taxes and fees.

Very sad but perhaps a bit of hope through the ballot box.

Oregon has no refineries. Fuel comes in primarily via a pipeline from Washington State.

In other news....today is the first smoke using the 100% Pecan Pellets. The smoke smells wonderful. Nice meaty St Louis pork ribs ready for the wrap right about now....

Nice!
I found gas at a Costco near me (not the closest one by any means) for $3.19. Best price I've seen in WA state in a long time!

This will affect California, Arizona, Washington, Nevada and Oregon.

I don't check prices much around here anymore, when my work truck needs fuel I just go get some and when my personal vehicle needs fuel it is kind of the same. I actually pick my fill ups based more on where I get the better cash back on Upside App. I have been using it for coming close to 3yrs now and have almost $1,800 earned in that time frame

When I saw when this thread started I immediately thought of who was the president at the time...

I've heard of this. Luckily never been to San Fran...or NYC for that matter. Zero desire to do so. The smell of weed and urine wafting through the air is what people seem to report.

So stupid. But, when a gas station owner tried rounding up his prices to stop this stupidity, people went to his competitor for .1¢ less. We really arent that smart as a people. I would drive out of my way to buy gas from someone who didn't price this way just to protest. Like little lemmings, people drive around and never questions this.

Back in the Stone Age when we got our internet through dialup, I asked my local IP why he didn't just round up from $19.95 to $20 a month. I mean, "come on!...right?". He told me he tried it and lost business. People actually called to complain and switched providers over 5¢.

After going to St. Croix (on business) 40 years ago, I realized the only purpose for the penny was taxes and jerks who charge .99.99 for crap. St. Croix didn't use pennies, everything was priced to the nickel. Finally the nation followed suit and we're getting rid of pennies as of this year, but now that almost everything is digital...they can still ".99.99" us in to stupid oblivion!:emoji_unamused:

Virginia has fallen again. For some reason the idiots here want to tie us to the Green Scam of Cali. Few people want EV's, but the reason they want us restricted to them...well, I better stop there...

America - where people will choose a 1/4 lbs burger over a 1/3 lbs Burger for the same price. Just google this and I think you'll find A&W was the company that found this out.

as far as gas prices go it's just another thing for people to complain about. I can assure you, the oil & gas industry is getting hammered right now but that's how it's aways been. These things are controlled by supply & demand.

Ha, ha! I'll be danged if that is not right!
The general population...amIright?! so many people cant do basic math.

So in reality, the oil companies in America say they need oil at above $63 a barrel to be profitable. That equates to about $2.40 a gallon for gas before the fed, states and even localities these days step on it (according to an online calculator). That calculator says crude is running $60.47 per barrel putting nationwide gas (I assume thats an average) at around $3 a gallon.

So right now they are slashing jobs and reducing exploration. Kind of the opposite of what I thought we would be doing about now. Corporations binge and purge all the time, its one of the reasons since my early 20's I never sought a job with the government (Although I did work for a DOD contractor for about 5 years early on) or large corporations, seeking jobs with small business where you are much more than an employee number to them.

Seems like what we should be pushing for is innovation to produce more oil for less cost. But I'm just an old metal fabricator, so easy for me to say. But, things definitely dont look good for American oil right now with the current model. The Saudis are the ones that have driven the prices down. Gonna be hard to convince most Americans of the oil industry pain though, we just want lower prices...even if we cant do math!

When I need fuel, I have to buy it regardless. I can't get my boat to the landing on empty and my customers don't want to hear what it costs me. I've thought about that Upside app and am curious how much you get bombarded with junk mail, calls, and texts...
