I did not buy all of these bottles in the background.
I was very lucky and won a killer raffle and got some awesome bourbons.
When I won, I got booed by the losers! -lol- I was stoked!
Wow nice haul...congrats on the win! I'm afraid I woulda been one of those losers booing you LOL! :emoji_laughing:

availability is funny. When I go see my son I take a bottle of Buffalo Trace. I have, he doesn't. I bring back a bottle of Weller's. He has, I don't.

I'm on a bit of an Irish kick lately. I like the Proper 12 at the moment. I got ripped a bit by Facebook friends for very much liking the Jameson Orange. I am prepared to be ripped for liking Kurveball BBQ whiskey. It's pretty cheap, but makes a killer Old fashioned with brow sugar simple syrup. It's pretty rich, so cant drink too much. I don't get too hung up on what I'm supposed to like, just what I do like anyway.

I started watching a YouTube channel several months ago in which a guy and his son sample bourbon and other whiskies and offer insights and tasting notes. I find it quite informative and entertaining. After watching this channel awhile, I've become partial to Old Forester bourbon and rye, and Pikesville rye (sometimes hard to find).

I'd post a link, but I've read somewhere that posting links is not appreciated here with a few exceptions. I suspect this channel would be easy to find if you did a google search though.
I've been subscribed to them for about a year now, before the son came from behind the camera. They're very informative and entertaining. Wish I could spend an evening drinking with them some day, especially since they can afford to drink better bourbons than I do.

, but I've been trying to find some of this mystical product Buffalo Trace. I hear people singing its praises but I've yet to cross paths with a bottle. The Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard Exchanges have it on an irregular basis I'm told. They work outside of the state laws of Virginia's ABC who consider it a "Limited Availability Product" and make it even more of a PITA to obtain. Read HERE. I bought a bottle of Four Roses small batch on my last attempt to find the Buffalo, so that's gonna hafta do. I'm not working that hard to find a bottle of liquor.
Buffalo Trace is pretty common in WA state. My friend and I have flown there for the Bourbon Trail twice now, including the Buffalo Trace distillery, whose tour is one of the best, imo. You have Kentucky right next door to you. Take a couple days for a road trip. You won't be disappointed.

I'm getting low, had to tilt the barrel for this small amount.

Basil Hayden Bourbon and George Dickel Whisky

I have a full seal intact bottle of 20 year old Dickel bottled in 1962 Look up Saurian Brandy (see StarTrek). The Enterprise fought wars all over the universe for it. It's over 80 years old.
Someday maybe I'll taste it.

I know exactly which bottle you're talking about. I've seen two of them empty. One was owned by my friend's older brother in the early 70's, and the other I saw displayed with other empties at Kentucky Artisan Distillery in Crestwood, KY. That's where they make Jefferson's.

Right next door is a long drive as I live in the SE corner of Va, but the kayaking thread has put an itch in me for a fishing trip. This could be what sets it off.

So I see a new reply to this thread and notice that apparently I never hit the "post reply" on this.. dummy me.

Slightly off topic… a cow-orker was helping a friend move stuff from a deceased parents house. They found a bottle of Crown Royal. Knowing that I was a whisky drinker she gave it to me. It’s a sealed bottle banded 1969. In the bag & box. Haven’t opened it yet.

Unfortunately, whiskey doesn't age in the bottle like wine. In fact, if exposed to light, whiskey/whisky/bourbon can degrade. Same with wine. The Whisk(e)y Tribe YouTube guys did a test on how light, specifically sunlight, changes w/w/b.

That's why I'll probably never taste my Saurian brandy but the sealed bottle is another story. Kind of like Louis the 13th Cognac..

My son gave me this just today. It's a bottle and label I have no experience with...He has poured about 3 drinks out of it, and says it's very good. He's got good taste in whiskeys, and has never steered me wrong yet. I'm looking forward to trying it.

Went to 3 places yesterday for BT. Normally it's all over. No can find, I'm still on the hunt.

And yes it will dissipate, even in my little barrel it will do the angels share thing if left too long.

I am shocked I haven't seen this thread before. Way back in the days when I could buy a bottle or three and stay under $100, I drank a lot of different single malts. Highland was my preference. Out of the 30 or so brands I tried The Macallan 12yr Sherry is my go to. I used to be able to get it for $39 per 750ml. Last bottle I bought was $100. That was last year. I have tried since then, less expensive stuff. I would rather not drink at all if it's not The Macallan to be honest.
I did like the Buffalo Trace bourbon, but I cannot drink it due to the sugar.

So since I have been priced out of the market , I don't drink much anymore. I have 3 or 4 bottles waiting for my retirement. I was saving a bottle of The Macallan 18 for that, but I was weak and heard voices, and I had to drink it. Glad I did, stuff is almost $400 a bottle now! FWIW the voices still remain........

Anyone with recommendations for a Macallan 12 yr substitute?

I was a big fan of the MacCallans, still am just won't pay for it anymore. Another Speyside favorite with a similar flavor profile is the Balvenie 12 year-old Doublewood. Long gone are the days of twenty buck a bottle, Total Wine stocks if for around $65 these day I think
