Had a craving for Sloppy Joes .

Picked up the ingredients i always use-

Mccormick Sloppy Joe mix*
6 ounce can tomato paste.
Kaiser rolls
93% Lean GB.

Made them as always, but they were much too sweet!

*only "homestyle sloppy joe" seasoning was available.... never saw it labeled that way before.... re-branding, or a mix with extra sugar?

Really like the flavor of the original seasoning.

Is homestyle the brand or a description of McCormicks product. I can't find it anywhere.

It was mccormick homestyle sloppy joe seasoning.

I couldn't find it in a search either. I have to go out today, and will see if i can get a picture of the package.

Have never had the canned stuff or the mix... my wife has always made her moms recipe, same one she used when she owned her bakery. Not sure I would care for them.

All we ever use is "Manwich" And Ground Beef.
I would add a little Heat & Spices, if I could get away with it, so all I do is add some Frank's to my own bowl or plate.

I make mine from scratch and having the recipe in front of you means you can dial up or dial down any particular ingredient to suit your tastes.

This what I use. I let sit for little bit to thicken up.

Ingredients
  • 1 lb. 93% extra lean ground beef
    1 medium onion, finely chopped
    1-1/2 Tbsp. all-purpose flour
    1 cup diet cola
2/3 cup ketchup with no added sugar
    1 Tbsp. vinegar
    1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
    2 tsp. dry mustard
    3 Tbsp. Splenda Brown Sugar.
Directions

Brown ground beef and onion in a large skillet; drain well. Stir in remaining ingredients as listed; mix well. Simmer for 30 minutes, uncovered so it will thicken.

Can this be mixed together and frozen in portions? There are only 2 of us. But it sounds like a great recipe. Thanks

Of course. I usually make it a day ahead because like chili it gets better on the reheat. You could also make a 5# batch easy enough. The best tip is roasting the meat with the spices atop it, we do the same thing when making the meat for green chili. It really wakes up the flavors of the spices.
