Hello everyone, I would like to use this thread as a platform for my first smoker build. I have taken several pictures and will continue to update as the build progresses.

    Build Info:

    Propane heat
    Cedar siding
    Plywood construction
3' x 3' footprint with 2' overhangs off each end
1 smashed thumb and 3 semi serious splinters

    Stay tuned,
    Dirty Don

I like it Don - what are your plans for smokage? Sausage?

    Keep up the good work!

Starting with the pressure treated frame, the overall size is 3 x 8.

Framing in the nontreated lumber for the floor of the smoker.

I want to keep things simple at first... pulled pork and smoked cheeses. The wife really enjoys cast iron cooking so hopefully we will also be able to smoke up some baked beans too!!

The floor is framed in and we will be starting on the walls next.

The floor side rails have been cut at an angle, this will allow me to pull the unit with the tractor much like a sled.

Framing the walls and getting ready for the insulation.

The walls have been insulated with Roxul insulation. Both Home Depot and Lowes in my area carry this product.

The heat source is this 30,000 btu double propane burner. I found this one on clearance for $11. It was missing a leg... carriage bolts fixed that problem.

The unit will be protected with heat shields. Full size 18x26 restaurant grade sheet pans will be used as heat shields.

Ceramic fence insulators will bolt to the walls and hold the heat shields. This product is cheap, 10 for $5, and provide the proper offset between the shield and the wall.

2x12's are used for the roof trusses.
The entire smoker will be skinned in cedar planks.

I've opted to leave a small opening in the roof. This should allow the smoker to breath well and is in addition to the vent that will be installed in the rear truss. I will also be able to close this opening should the need arise.

The metal screen is to keep the bugs out.

Thank you Al! It was awfully cold today here in Ohio but I got a good start on the door.

The hinges were installed and the door hung today.

I used 8" lag bolts to anchor the 4x4 to the wall, the door is very heavy. I may have a problem with it sagging in the future. If that happens I will install a small block of wood for the door to rest on when it is closed.

I need to find some good heat resistant gasket material. Preferably something that I can screw mount, D shaped gasket perhaps?
