I LOVE SUPERMAN!

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the 1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.
As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.
We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank Kool-aid made with sugar, but we weren't overweight because,
WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computer! s, no Internet or chat rooms.......
WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

If YOU are one of them.CONGRATULATIONS!

Now that i look back on it, we had it pretty good without all the complexities. Just because I'll be 62... don't mean I'm through.

I must have been spoiled, we had ABC, CBS, NBC, & PBS. My dad had the first remote control ever, it was either Steve or Michelle. He would watch Mutual of Omaha's Animal Kingdom all the time on PBS and guess what, so did we, no choice, only one TV...I didn't care for capt crunch, but crunch berries!! I'd eat the regular capt crunch pieces so I could have a whole bowl of the berries. I also loved King Vitamin and saw it in the store as little ago as three years. Or cheerios with sliced banana in it. If it was a good payday we might have been lucky enough to order pizza so mom didn't have to cook that day. Sunday evenings we's go to the local dairy farm where they sold ice cream, come back and watch the incredible hulk. When you heard dad's whistle you'd better come runnin. We also made a jitney and forgot the brakes. Sunday morning Sunday school and then lunch at Nana and PapPap's. Always had a baseball glove on your bike handle in case a game broke out. The flower bed sprinkler was our cool off in the summer time, running and jumping through it! I still try to make sure my son has these same experiences...he'll still go cray fish or toad hunting at 13!

Shell ......... you and I must be the same age! cause that was my TV schedule as well, just add in the Flinstones & Muppets ........ the whole family watched them too.

I would sneak after school and watch the TV version of Superman on channel 20 by twisting the 'other' knob (i think it was UHF) and then stick a piece of cardboard to push that knob 'in' for a better picture.

Then I graduated to doing skid outs on my own Big-Wheel. Then trying to out stretch my STRETCH ARMSTRONG ............. yep it did break, it looked like it was filled with maple syrup.

Then during the summer we would stay out allday long, eat at a friends house, come home when mom yelled, then 'go' to bed ..... which meant sneak out the window! i dont think I ever got caught either .......

Surley you must of ate pebbles. Does anyone remember Diver Dan, Johnny quest, with spinner and paddle foot, Fire ball XL5, Davy and goliath, The Rita Bell Show, Bill Kennedy. George Peroit Ahh I just could go and I just turned Fifty. Maybe alot of this was just Michigan stuff on our three black and white channels.

Well Davy .... I loved Davy and Golith!

We watched Ed Sullivan, Carol Burnette, Lucile Ball, Red Skelton, Rifleman, Gun Smoke, Bonanza, Tarzan, Ma and Pa Kettle, Elvis, Dark Shadows, Groucho Marx, Wagon Train, Rock Hudson and Doris Day, Donald Oconnor, Saturday night fright night movies, American Band Stand, Brad Davis (a local band stand), Deputy Dawg, Ranger Andy, Bozo the Clown, What's My Line .... and we ate Wheaties and Quaker Oats cerial. We got a bag of Oreos, a bag of Lays Potatoe Chips and a half gallon of cherry vanilla ice cream every payday!
