As usual I will get out of work Thanksgiving morning for the 19th time (will be the last time too as I am leaving my job in a few weeks). It's just the GF and pooch as always. I got a 16.5lb bird in the fridge that will go in the oven shortly after I get home. Then I am going to start drinking beer as it roasts. Between the GF and I will get the sides together, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green bean casserole, gravy, and rolls. Then sleep time, and that night search around on the internet for some possible good deals, don't need a damn thing but doesn't hurt to look.

SIL is frying two turkeys for all 11 of us. The rest of the fam is bringing sides. 3 grandbabies will be there. Should be total chaos of the best kind.

SIL tradition is to fry the turkeys and eat before the Cowboys game. He is from Dallas and a huge fan. We will just go along with that. bahah.

Ours was a few weeks ago, normally we have lots of family.
But we were down working at the property for the long weekend . Came home to cold left overs that the SIL did up for the 4 of us, SIL and MIL ate hot and we had cold when we got back.

But it was very nice of them to cook it , so a couple plates heated in the microwave was fantastic.

Was going to be just the 4 of us for Christmas, was told yesterday that 8 more are coming , so that should be nice.

Just my wife, myself and of course the dog. Black Forest ham, green bean casserole, stuffing, corn bread muffins and chocolate pie with a hint of mint topped with fresh made whipped cream. Been this way for a number of years for us so we are used to it. Both sides of the family are scattered all over the country, plus me being in the Navy for 26 years led to many missed family get togethers over the years.

Just a simple meal at home with Mrs Civil and the kiddos…. Gonna roast up a 11 lb capon on the RT after an overnight brine……some Idaho russet mashed, focaccia fennel dressing, balsamic apple salad, and corn bread muffins…… I’m doing the bird, kids doing the sides (the boy does the home made focaccia for the dressing) and Mrs doing the muffins…

Wishing hope and thanks to all and especially for those in memory only!!!!
Ha, there are no simple meals I have seen in the Civil household...lo

Just me and Ann.I'm smoking a boneless turkey breast. And having surf and turf. Tails and beef tenderloin. And stone crab claws.
Hell of a meal, turkey, tenderloin, lobster tails and stone crab?? sounds great.

lol……about spit my drink out laughing……..so true!!!

Example, I often drink herbal tea at night…… has to be in the right cup to hold heat, then boiled filter or bottled water, then seeped for a precise time (I use a timer) based on the herb then the right honey…..I even have some imported Turkish honey that is perfect for spicy herbs….. some flowery honey from Hawaii for the flowery herbs, and crystalized honey for minty and medicinal herbs………. All very simple 🤓

It's going to be a quiet one. The wife and niece are in the Philippines visiting family ( I didn't want to do the 15 hour flight). I have been home with the dogs while the guest bathroom is being renovated. Retired so I am not use to getting up early but have to get up at 7:45am every day so they can work.

My parents invited me to their place but I think I would rather catch up on sleep and smoke a Turkey breast when I eventually crawl out of bed. Trying a new recipe that uses Juniper berries. I will add garlic butter mashed potatoes but not much else.

I used to love when the Mrs. went to her family's for the holiday and I "had" to stay home with the dog, we would spend the day watching old movies and eating anything I felt like making.. A nice gin would be a perfect pairing for that juniper berries too!

What are yours?

For us, it's 2 turkeys...1 16+lber brined, injected, and smoked. The other, an 18lber., injected and fried. Also a double smoked ham along with about any side dish you can imagine. My mission, should I choose to accept it, is the turkeys and the sweet potato casseroles. Most everyone is bringing something. We'll have around 35-40 people here, it'll be a great time with family and friends...
16lb turkey in a bag/oven. no brine because the live in sodium water in that bag. custon dry rub after a slathering of compound butter. stove top stuffing (outside the bird.) green bean casserole , mashed taters, my own special gravy from broth of giblets/neck. home made pimento cheese and crackers. and a small shark-coochie board with olives, cheese cubes, Wickles pickles and okra.

For the many years we were in SLC, it was just me any my wife. Some days I miss the calm, but its gonna be the chaos from now on...8 adults, 3 grandbabies.
