Disgusting. There is something wrong with the NJ governor for even thinking flags should be half staff for someone like her, she certainly was not in that hotel room protecting our country like our heroes are doing for us daily. I dont care how great a performer is, we should not be mourning that way for someone that takes their own life through drugs or alcohol.  NEPAS pic says it all.

She was a citizen of New Jersey, and a beloved one at that. I believe the majority of folks aren't looking at her as a hero, but as a tragic example of what bad decisions cause. Like it or not, due to her celebrity her death gets top billing. Just like Kurt Cobain, Elvis, Janis Joplin, Heath Ledger etc.... Quite frankly, I'd rather see more coverage of dead celebrities than live ones. Their demise can at least serve as a warning to youngsters who idolize the living ones.

I mean no disrespect to those who have fallen serving our country, and I agree that they deserve much more recognition. I just don't see the 2 being mutually exclusive.

She had a great voice and was one of the greatest artists in the late 80's and early 90's.

What happened later with the drug use should not be an issue.

Although I don't agree with the flying of flags at half mast, I do understand why the current governor felt it was appropriate based on his explanation.

As for the picture Nepas posted, I would ask this... Why are those soldiers "heroes"?

Is it because they died doing their job? Or is it just because they were soldiers who died.

Who were those soldiers? What were their names? What did they do before they joined the Armed Forces? What did they do while they were in the Armed Forces? So many "Whats"

What about cops? What about firefighters?

What exactly makes someone worthy of the title "Hero" ?

Whitney Houston inspired a lot of people. That should be worth something.

Should not be an issue...ARE YOU KIDDING ME ? She was a DRUG HEAD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! God gave her that voice and she could not handle it....so much for that !!!!!!
Hero
[heer-oh]   Example Sentences Origin
he·ro
[heer-oh] Show IPA

noun, plural -roes; for 5 also -ros.

1.
a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble  qualities.

2.
a person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model  or ideal: He was a local hero when he saved the drowning child.

3.
the principal male character in a story, play, film, etc.

4.
Classical Mythology .
a.
a being of godlike prowess and beneficence who often came to be honored as a divinity.

b.
(in the Homeric period) a warrior-chieftain of special strength, courage, or ability.

c.
(in later antiquity) an immortal being; demigod.

5.
hero sandwich.

I think the Problem is the word "Hero" gets thrown around a lil too much, and then when it should be used it has less of an impact, and then people tend to use it with names like Whitney Houston, She is NOT a HERO, but she was definately a legend and always will be if we like or not, and I I am on the NOT side of that,

recently in my local news a Man was driving with his 4yr old daughter, he hit and icy spot flipped over a guide rail and landed upside down in a creek he could not get his daughter out, a construction crew was driving by, saw him frantically jumping waving his arms, they grabbed some chains they had and pulled the vehicle out of the creek and found the girl was trapped under the water, the pulled her to the bank and started CPR and revived her,
Those men are HEROS

Someone who puts themselves at risk IN the line of Duty in order to help others, like soldiers, police, fireman, those are Heros, but I don't consider smoking crack, popping pills, drinking risking your life to help others, actually it is quite  selfish and that is a tragedy

this is one of the main concerns with our society and how it acts,  a drug addict crack head can be put on a pedestal just because she has money and at one time was a good singer, why does she deserve all the media attention because she died of a drug overdose?   she had the world in her hand and chose to throw it away on drugs instead of using it to do good and maybe help some of the young kids by setting a good example.   Now governors want to fly state flags at half mast and the media wants to televise her funeral?   give me a break   why doesn't the media put all that time into printing the truth about her drug addiction.

Also tragic that her Peers (Grammy organizers) choose to delete a tribute to Clarence Clemens who was a much better musician and instead put up a tribute to Whitney?   who makes that call?

As a person who was/is on the "business end" of a high caliber round being shot from someone hiding in the hills I can tell you it takes every once of energy and focus to do the mission at hand.  Time an time again, and again.  All this for those who, back home doing daily rants under an umbrella of freedom, can't imagine what goes on in the middle of the night on the southern border, in the hood in any metro area, and in the sandbox abroad.  The fight for freedom gives those to do as they wish under the laws of that jurisdiction.

I;m not suggesting right or wrong but felt I had to write this as I see a hero is someone saving a life, taking care of the sick / injured, fighting a house fire or rescue,  carrying out a sortie abroad and at home.  And even that snow plow driver coming in your neighborhood after you've had the mother load dumped on your road and you now can get out to get a family member to the doctor's office.  Not someone who had a god given voice and chose to not walk away from the vices and alleged abuse.  Yes she was inspiring, Hero - maybe for someone she saved through her songs but that's a stretch for her to be seen as such on a global scale.

Also - Well put Big!!
