Hi ya gang,

Can someone tell me what type of tree this came from? I have a big one in the front yard. These spiny balls are everywhere; worse than having to rake leaves. I'm in East-Central Ohio.

Edit: It's about 1.5 inches across give or take.
Thnx,

Ray

That's a sweetgum ball. Some folks also call the trees redgum.

They're planted a lot as ornamentals. Have lots of them in front yards down the street.

Yup its a sweetgum tree. They are great shade trees but a pain in the arse with all the balls. I had one cut down in my front yard 3 years ago and still find the balls everywere.

Have three of them myself.Someone asked about smoking with sweetgum few months back and consensus was no good-avoid for smoking..I have cut a few of the trees down and the firewood was worthless- compared to oak or cherry in my area.

Not good for distance but they hurt from a slingshot. Don't ask me how I know!!

looks like they'd be on par w/ buckeye tree cleanup. in the fall i fill multiple 5 gallon buckets w/ buckeyes. i love being a "Buckeye" , but despise cleaning them from the yard.

Man.... that picture just messed my brain up. My Grandmother had one of those things in the back yard. My brother and I would go runnin across the yard chasin each other and hit one of those things with a bare foot..... o my God..... Like a race car at Daytona loosin a tire on the bank. Wow.... what a flashback!

I thought a buckeye was a little peanut butter ball with chocolate on the top!!!

We have a buttonwood out front and we get little balls from them but not with the spikes!!

Down here, Sweetgums are considered pests and cut down out of most yards. Tall, lanky trees that love to put out suckers that only make them look worse.
