I'm curious as to what others think about this. I'm sure a lot of these will be from our culture and how we were raised.

What foods do you think play together well, I mean real well. This can be a beverage, condiment, side or spice complimenting a food as well.

I'll start with a few.
  • Spinach and feta
  • Bacon and eggs

  • Peppers and onions
  • Pineapple and Ham
  • Raspberry and chicken
  • Chocolate and Milk
  • Hot wings and Stout Beer
  • Coffee and donuts
  • Fried eggplant w/ Ketchup
  • Eggs over easy w /Salt and pepper
  • BLT with Potato chips

garlic and onion

dill and salmon

chocolate and red pepper (try it)

cumin and pepper

tomato and oregano

smoked pork and crockpot pinto beans

Steak and eggs

Steak and potato's

Steak and rice

Peanut butter and American cheese.

Vanilla bean ice cream and peach cobbler.

Sweet potato pie and whipped cream.

Dark chocolate and roasted almonds.

Dark roast espresso coffee and heavy cream.

Fried potatoes and onions.

Chorizo and eggs.

Single malt scotch and one small ice cube.

Yogurt and blueberries.

Pancakes and genuine maple syrup.

Beer and anything except sour cream... YUK! I don't know how anybody eats sour cream. When I have to use it in a recipe, I have my wife scoop it and add it in. The smell alone makes me wanna.. you know.

Back to the topic;

Corned beef and cabbage

Pastrami and sour kraut and all things that make the wonderful Reuben.

Chorizo and eggs with ???

Cream cheese and jalapenos

Beef and Swiss cheese

Crab / lobster and hollandaise sauce! Try it!

Here's one for the opposite list: foods that don't go together:

coffee and peanut butter.

I tried eating a peanut butter sandwich while have a cup of coffee. Big mistake! The two together create some sort of toxic substance that instantly make you gag. Weird, but true.

As for the original topic:

Ice cream and any dessert (i.e.,  à la mode)

Hamburgers and baked beans (especially Gary's)

Eggs and ham

All of those are trite, but they are just about the best pairings anyone has ever found.

Doesn't bother me one bit

, in fact I think peanut butter is almost as perfect a food as bacon. Try a peanut butter and bacon sandwich and you'll understand.

Two others on my short list-

Baked beans and corn bread

Bacon cheese burger on a raised glazed donut(AKA the Luther Burger)

I'm trying to think of weird stuff I like that goes together surprisingly well.  Here is one that folks go from "yuck" to OMG! once they try it.

Peanut butter and Merzetta pepperoncini peppers.  It is a blast at a party to put a jar of the peppers on the same tray as a jar of Jif peanut butter, along with plastic forks and knives.  Once people get brave enough to try it, they can't stop eating it.  It is really fun to watch.

I learned of the combo at a biker bar in Locke, CA named "Al the Wop's."  It is a tiny little town on the Sacramento Delta.  After eating and sitting at the bar, there were jars of pepperoncini's and Jif peanut butter all along the bar.  Finally curiosity got the better of me.  The bartender said to try it.  I thought it was some kind of practical joke, like a snipe hunt.  I was expecting to get ready to hurl.  The gal who was along with me for the ride that day tried it with me.  We were instantly hooked!  For those who enjoy wearing black leather and riding two wheels, Al's Place is a must stop if you're in the Delta of California.  Google "Al the Wop's" and look at the pics.

Edit addition:  I know some might be offended by the name of the bar, a derogatory name for those of Italian descent.  Being half Italian myself, I had to go there.  The name is part of the history of the place dating back to 1915.  Locke, CA is part of the National Register of Historic Places.  The bar/restaurant was named by Al Adami himself in 1934, the only non-Chinese business in the town at the time.
