I have been on dozens of web sites, watched endless amounts of youtube videos and read online discussions in regards to soaking my wood before a smoke or not.

My uncle swears up and down that dry wood is the best and my father will tell me that you have to soak your wood for a good hour before using it.

I know you should always listen to your daddy when it making important decisions like these but, does anyone have a clear-cut answer for me?

There's only one way that water gets into my smoker...I wet smoke most everything so my water pans are used alot. I quit soaking my smoke wood after learning how long it took to actually get any smoke. It's just extends your start-up time...I've yet to see any benefit.

If using my GOSM I actually do both I add some soaked chips and some dry chips. As was stated above wet chips have to dry first so by using both I have some that smoke right away and some that have to dry before smoking so I think it gives me a longer amount of smoke. I use a bigger aftermarket chip box tho.

The only place I've used soaked chips or chunks is on the grill where the temperatures are so high that the wood may ignite before any smoke is generated

x2 why season the wood if you are just gonna soak it in water ?
