We're hunting private property in AL's Zone B, its pretty much wide open for us.
No tags required, simple reporting and the property owner tells us what we can harvest, e.g. 8pts or better outside the ears, and mature does with no young.

Over a decade hunting this property and never seen a warden.

I spend a lot of time trout fishing at a local state management area and with just enough cold weather the ponds are enough iced over that today was a no-go but there were more than a few folks hunting.

I haven't hunted in many years and big game is just something I have no desire to do at this point in my life but small game I will absolutely do.At this point in the season I'm not going to invest in a license until next year.

In RI as of 2025 small game hunting with air rifles is now legal provided minimum requirements are met,.177-.30 cal with a fps of 700+ which all mine exceed and then some.So today I broke out the Diana 48 (.22) and will make sure tomorrow that it's on point as it's been a while since I shot it.

The 6.5 Gredel strikes again! Last night our oldest daughter pulled the trigger for the 3rd year in a row making it 3yrs, 3 shots, 3 deer. Her younger sister was with this time learning. Now tonight we will see if she can repeat her sister's luck.
Hunting has been tough going this year with low deer numbers but these girls have been sticking it out and going every chance we get. Got a great story out of it and smiles all around.

A guy I work with was helping a friend do a European mount. When they were getting ready to skin the head, my friend noticed what he thought was a pus sack - infection of some sort. It wasn't!

It was a third eye - complete with socket. He said the mount looks like an alien with antlers!

Not sure I would feel good eating the cousin of the Simpson's 3 eyed fish hahahaha

Last winters otter and beaver trappings from my farm lakes/ponds just came back from the tanner
Goal = enough for a nice blanket.
Otters ranged in weight from 22 to 29 pounds...state record is 32 pounds here in Missouri.
Beaver (destructive critters!) are much harder to trap - they are very wary and may take a few weeks to trap.
Otters are far more curious and we usually get 'em in a few days.

Do you butcher them for the meat or just trapping to get rid of them?
Never had otter, but beaver and woodchuck are tasty!

Curious, what is the cost of tanning a belt like those, or say a coyote?

The beaver was in the trap a bit too long for comfort - but we are aware that parts of the beaver are considered delicacy.
We do put trail cams on each trap so we can monitor remotely.
Never even thought of trying to eat otter...

When I didn't know any better - I went through our regular taxidermist and got bad tanning and stupid high costs.

Then I shipped the rest to an Iowa tannery and the cost for 3 otters was about $180 that I sent frozen - not fleshed or dried.

I've shot a couple woodchucks with 22, one I was after for over 1yr around the farm yard. I thought about trying the meat after I skinned it, had a buddy of mine flesh and dry it for me as a little trophy hide beings it had quite the story, couple of my buddies thought I was going to go all Carl Spackler on it till I finally got a crack at it.
