Hey guys/gals I'm about to start my build, and I was wanting to add gas shocks for the lid.  I'm using a oval 275 oil drum that I cut horizontal all the way around.  Where I curious is where is a good place to order them for a good price/product, and what poundage would I need to get it to hold itself up.

Thanks for the help,

Scott

Scott,

I'm no pit builder, but I would be concerned about the plastic & rubber seals in gas pistons not holding up to the heat of the pit.  Guess it really depends on the design as to how hot they might get, but I think all the horizontal pits like that I've seen use a physical counterweight.  Not saying it can't be done though.  My concern would be if a seal blew out while the pit was open that heavy door might crash down on your head or arms (that would be my luck).

Yeah I understand the concern, as I've thought about that and would not want it to happen lol.  If you guys have any ideas even with a counter weight and what to use.  Please let me know.
