I've mentioned before that I got this grill as a Fathers day gift from the wife and kids . Had this house built in '06 . Moved in in April , got the grill in June . Been on the patio ever since . It's the workhorse of all of them , and has cooked a lot of meals .
I noticed the other day that the clean out sweep was rusted through . So I ordered one from Weber .
Not as clean as it should be . Not normally like that .
20261012_114643.jpg
I made a limited effort to remove it , then reached for the grinder .
20261012_122146.jpg
The gas tube was in bad shape too . Crumbled when I tapped on it .
20261012_122202.jpg
Cleaned up the bottom so the vanes would seal , and reinstalled .
removed the burner tube , and got that ordered up .

This was bought and assembled at Ace Hardware . The lid slides / rollers were installed backwards from the start .
Never new that until I got my 26 and assmbeled it myself . Figured while I was ordering the burner , I'd get the bail kit .
You can buy just the slides , but Weber only sells it as a whole kit . Plus I wasn't sure if I was gonna have to cut it off or not .
The big side of the roller goes out , away from the grill .
These never did roll like they should , plus they melt from being jammed into the bottom of the grill .
Nuts came right off , but I'm gonna have to cut the rollers off .

Other side .
20261014_131811.jpg
That's why I bought the whole thing . I'll hang onto the old bail , but was nice
to just install all new parts . Works great . They roll when the lid goes up , and it
opens farther than before .

So the bail kit and the burner tube was one order . Price made the shipping free .
I get the bail kit ,,, no burner . Figures .
Got it figured out and on the way . Showed up the next day .
It was a pain to get it out . No good way to get the grinder in there .
So had to use a torch and hand tools .
Directions said to remove the table . I never even thought of that , but sure made things easy .
20261016_105155.jpg
The sweep was hitting the burner before . I figured the new one would fix that , but it didn't .
So I bent the bracket some , and put a shim at the top to point it up .
20261016_111444.jpg
That did the trick .
20261016_111450.jpg
It has always worked , but I had to light it by hand . The spark thing
hasn't worked for years .
Sure is gonna be nice to have the push of the button again .
20261016_112056.jpg
So it's back in good working order , next was the cosmetics .
The top on these get really sun faded and " dry " . Soaks up grease and stains
pretty easy .

20261012_133212.jpg
Hit it with a sanding sponge . Not gonna get it all out , but it's better .
20261016_113121.jpg
Then the Mothers Cali gold ,,
20261016_113238.jpg
Soaked up 2 coats so far . I'll hit it a couple more times . Once it sits in the Sun ,
it evens out pretty good . Biggest thing is protection .
20261016_113547.jpg
Looks better over all .
20261016_114943.jpg

There's supposed to be a white wall trim peice that goes on the wheel .
The weather got to them long ago , and it just doesn't look the same without them .
20261016_114951.jpg
Weber used to sell them , but they're gone now . The wheels on these are 8 "
Weber sells the newer replacements for 40 bucks a peice . Not really what I want
so I passed .
Then I found some new old stock on grill parts.com . The whole wheel set with the inserts
$90.00 . I'm in around $150.00 already , so I'll have to think about that some .
Then ,
I was on Etsy getting ideas for stuff to make in the shop , and this pops up ,
Some guy is 3D printing the inserts . $ 18.00 for the pair . Figured for that
I could make them fit if they didn't .
20261015_185440.jpg
Little trim detailer on the wheels ,
20261016_115408.jpg
And they snapped right on . Perfect alignment . No slop , not loose ,
perfect ! Makes all the difference . What a find . I'm happy about that .
20261016_115442.jpg
So that's it . Maybe good for another 20 . It does have some rust in the bottom .
I figuered out that the sweep was hitting the burner because the charcoal grate lugs are rusting and sagging .
Ones about ready to break off . Might have to put some bolts through to fix that .
I always hit the lid with some Mothers wax too .
Looks pretty good I think .
20261016_123924.jpg

That’s it . Looks like an aftermarket one . Should fit .

Looking like new! I gifted my kettle to my grandson
Thanks . My first kettle was an 18 " one touch , open ash pan . Had the basic white wall wheels on it . Pretty fancy for 1982 . I gave it to a guy at work , and he told me a few weeks ago that he still uses it .

I gave my first 22 " to my Dad . Daisey wheels and wood handles . It's still sitting on the patio at Mom's .
Nice job Rich!
Thanks Steve . Just thought I'd show it . Love working on old stuff .
Nice Rich! My performer has the same top, will try the wax trick.
Thanks . They're great grills . I've been using the wax on it for a long time . I had the Mother's in the garage , but you could use whatever you have . I just let it soak in . I originally was gonna use a spray on UV water proofing . Decided to do a small test on the edge first . Glad I did . Damn stuff stayed sticky , never dried . Had to put some dirt on it and sand it down . I think wax is the best option .
Post up the results if you do it .

Oh, I have plenty of car detail stuff to try on it...lol

Very very nice. I get it. They made to be around for a long time.

That's my kicked to the curb kettle. The lid wood handle finally rotted away. Will make another woody. Tried a plastic replacement and they get really really hot.

Those are great for smoking . I want to bring it home , but I just don't need another kettle sitting out there .

Yeah , the plastic lid handles get hotter than the wood . I have a set collecting dust in the shop . Made from a split of Missouri wild cherry I found in the fire wood pile . The split was square enough I got a workable section out of it .
20190111_203018.jpg
I have an old handle I use for a pattern . Not exact because the bottom doesn't have the same profile . I tried , but I decided I wanted to keep my finger tips .
20190106_133853.jpg
They come out pretty good I think . Not fancy like some you see ,
but useable for sure .
20190111_202926.jpg
Used cherry stain and a satin finish .
20190127_202901.jpg
When I bought the master touch floor model mark down , the front handle was missing .
So rooted through the wood pile again .
20240104_110630.jpg
Took the handle off the 26 and traced it out .
20240104_110920.jpg
Hand worked the shape .
20240104_112922.jpg
Came out OK , but I cut on the wrong side of the line for the side returns .
So I couldn't hide the mounting bracket like on the long side .
20240108_085251.jpg
Drove me nuts , so ordered a new handle . $27.00 !
I have a matching set of 3 for the original style . If you're interested , I can send them to you .

I have a modern plastic front handle (with tool hooks) that is yours if you want it. Picked up 2 of those handles for $3 each. One replaced the bottom kettle handle. The other is how I figured out it doesn't work on the lid. I was planning to to bring it south to give away at the FL gathering, but forgot it in the garage.
I'm good on the wood, thanks for the offer. I have some blanked out pieces ready to finish.

Wow, your Performer looks great, Rich! If it were mine, I'd be grinning from ear to ear. Thanks for sharing the process. The best Father's Day gift I have ever got was my WSM in 2009. Very sentimental.

Old pic , but I have the original cover that came with it . Starting to show some wear after all the years .
Gonna be time for a new one .
