For a novice burbon drinker the Maker's Mark Cask Strength was nice - just what I needed.
I'm not crazy about standard MM, a little sweet and not worth the price. But I'm on my 3rd bottle of the cask Strength. It is excellent and it's been on sale a lot lately at around $30-35 /bottle at which it's a great bargain.

Here are the products off the Buffalo Trace Distillery website...
There are some great bourbons there. I was thinking BT was their base product but Ancient Age is clearly where the not-ready-for-primetimes go.
I'm going to have to keep an eye out for Benchmark. I agree some very cheap bourbons can still be very good. I consider Old Crow in that category....when you can find it, it's seldom over $15...PER HANDLE!!!

I even tried ordering straight from them but since I'm in Va they won't do it either.
Last year I was looking for a special bottle of bourbon to give as a gift to a friend, Weller's Reserve or Buffalo Trace. After weeks of looking for them, I ordered straight from Caskers, but there are other online distributors. First time ordering liquor online, but it was fairly easy. Just had to have someone 21 or over there to sign for it when it was delivered.

I just now entered a random Va. zip code and a list of bourbons came up that it seems they'll ship to you including Buffalo Trace, which is currently in stock, as well as Weller's Reserve both of which are IMPOSSIBLE to find in a store around me. May be worth a try...

Huh... thanks for the heads up! I just didn't think of ordering online other than straight from the maker. $15 for shipping is a bit steep so I'm gonna hafta make a decision if it's worth that much to me. Again, thank you!

No problem. Shipping is on the high side and buying online isn't something I'd do very often except for a special occasion when it's something I can't find. But it is convenient.

Those huge online distributors buying up product may be why a lot of the more sought after bourbons aren't available at local stores, they never seem to be out of stock on anything. My local stores won't even discuss the availability of Buffalo Trace, Weller's, Pappy Van Winkle, Blanton's, etc. They get so few bottles in stock, and it's always a random delivery, and they're gone immediately...

The local liquor barn store had to put banners over the front windows to keep eyes off the customer service counter where they have the higher end bottles of the few they get. Said people will look after hours to see what they have and will come back before opening and stand in line.....Just drive to Frankfort to the distillery and buy a bottle. They have Blanton's and Pappy but you can only buy 1 bottle......choose wisely.....lol

It is so interesting to see the differences in what's available based on location. In Kalifornia, spirits cannot be shipped directly to a retail purchaser (research 3 or 4 tier system).

Buffalo Trace is in stock at the Total Wine about 4 miles from my house. Most of the other BTD products are always out of stock (Wellers, Pappys, etc). I haven't explored it, but I believe TW has a new paid subscription group or club that gives first access to the bottles that are impossible to find.

This is interesting because when I ordered my friend a bottle of the BT, it came FedEx from California. I just thought that was odd because the distillery is in Frankfort, KY. Your prices are also a lot cheaper...

Edit to add this from the Caskers website: You are not buying from Caskers, but Caskers is connecting you to the people who have products...

So Caskers is just the middleman it seems...

Oddly enough, it seems that Buffalo Trace is the bourbon offering that most airlines have on their spirits menu.
So if you want to buy a ticket and then maybe pay another $9 per 1.5 ounce plastic bottle, that might be an option. :emoji_blush:

I enjoyed looking around Caskers. The middleman makes sense, because there were a few bottles that I cannot imagine spending that much money and drinking. 27k a bottle is bit spendy:) We have plenty of Buffalo Trace around here. It is very good, but for the same money I'd buy Knob Creek.

I checked their website this morning. That would explain the markup.

YouTube channel "Bourbon Real Talk" did a couple of interesting videos. One was on the 3 and 4 tier systems from distiller to retailer; and one was on the efforts to shut down direct shipping companies, which has been compared to a modern form of bootlegging. Both are interesting to watch.

Time for some WT 101.

Couple local.

The Abe I got at the Boundary Oak distillery just down the rd bout 12 miles.
The Corn I got at Heaven Hill Distillery. Abe is really smooth, no hot gotcha.

Couple more from the BV....Bourbon Vault

Stoll & Wolfe distillery I got in my wifes home town of Lititz PA. Went to her class reunion 5 years ago. stollandwolfedistilleryDOTcom....Never opened it.

Old Forester I got in Louisville at the distillery

Duke I have had for around 8 years now. Never open, label got some scratches from being in the back and other bottles rubbing on it.
