This weeks "sale" at Kroger FP=3.99/lb. I went the Kroger nearest us - they had one for $75, ..one..

Was at Costco (not the mega Costco but the normal size one) a couple days ago. they had NONE. No Briskets.

there are a couple options: 1. the meg Costco to see if they have any and how much they are charging (only listed them north of $6/lb). and 2. try other Kroger's which sounds like a hellish task.

Might need to put a hold on cooking the briskets a while. the prices and scarcity is ridiculous.

At the current price point, ( groceries) have thrown out a lot of beef for lack of sale. They are reluctant to replace supply at current prices. It won’t get better any time soon.

Horrible! Man why dont they just put it on close out pricing before tossing. so wrong to throw it away. on that note I did find a wag strip steak in the close out for $10 a couple weeks back. I could hardly believe my eyes. 5 days before out date - it was delish.

They have to sell stocked (already purchased ) at enough profit to repurchase more product. If they can’t do that, they throw it out and claim the tax credit as a total loss. This is more profitable than selling at a discount. Simple business. However, they likely won’t stock more of that product until there is sufficient demand at the given price point.

I always wondered about that. Seems they could drop the price and move it instead of tossing it. I've never understood grocery marketing, though.
SmokinEdge probably has the best explanation.
I worked with a young man once who had worked at Kroger and said he felt like crying seeing how much meat got thrown out.
Seems like there could be a better way.....

UnFrigginBelieveable. Man, that pisses me off.

If not, they would:
1) go out of business. Where does the money come from to buy more product? Sell low and buy high?
2) need to be subsidized by the state or federal government. Then you can shop at a state store instead of a private enterprise. At which point, the government would own the calf, the producers, the retailers and the consumer. We are dangerously close to that now.

I picked up a prime grade packer for my buddy a couple weeks ago from Costco. Price was upper $3 per pound, but better than the Sam's price of hamburger grade at $5

Not at our stores they mark it down by 30% for a day or two, after that it is marked down up to 55%.
I make sure I talk with the butcher's to find out when it will be marked down to 55% then get to the store at opening time and load up. I need another freezer, I guess 3 isn't enough. LOL

Sure they " shrink " stuff out , but it's always marked down first .
If it doesn't go out the door on the sell by date it gets donated . I shopped yesterday and they had a dozen ribeye steaks marked 50 % off .
My son works there and always has an eye on the deal isle . I know for a fact that it does not go in the trash here .

Just came back from grocery shopping for both my house and for my dad.Its turned into you get what you can get,its back to being completely ridiculous again.

It's been many, many years ago, but when I worked in the meat department at Winn Dixie, beef and pork was either reduced and sold or the beef ended up in the hamburger. Chicken was reduced for a day then thrown in the bone barrel. But usually the reduced price would move it out the door. But that created another problem in that we had people who would come in looking for the reduced meat and if there was none, would tell us that they would wait and come back when we reduced what we had...

I think I will find a nice chuck roast or 2 and smoke them, have seen a few good reviews . I aint paying sky high prices for brisket, I can buy boneless skinless chicken breast for $1.99 but dang wings are over $3.00 :emoji_disappointed:

Yup . They have a company or group that comes and gets the stuff that didn't sell .
I believe it goes to a food pantry . Not sure of all the details . They also have a frozen ground beef case . I'm sure that's where some of the beef goes .
Winn Dixie and Publix are a tourist attraction in my book . I was in The Winn Dixie in Gulf Shores looking at the meat case , and got talking with the guy about making sausage . He told me finish your shopping and stop back here .
Made me up some fresh country style links . Man those were good .

Yeah, I've been looking for a month to make a 20 pound batch of hipshot burgers. Butts are OK at $1.29lb, brisket at five bucks a pound makes them kind of expensive, just might hvave to lump that price pretty soon. RAY

I'm lucky to have a friend that is a farmer. I get all my meat (any cut I want and as large as I want) from her. It's all frozen directly after being slaughtered. I just put in an order for 2 full baby back ribs with the silver skin removed, I should have those in about 2 weeks.

I work in the grocery industry, we only throw out things that have actually gone bad. Everything else gets donated to a food bank, even the raw meat, we just have to freeze it for them for safety issues. All the inedible food goes to a company that composts it and turns it into energy and puts it into the grid. The leftover liquid goes to fertilize farms.
