It's just common sense. Trucks run on diesel. Diesel prices go up, freight costs go up. Trucking companies are in business to make a profit, not break even, or run at a loss, so the increased fuel costs get passed along to the consumer.

I feel it's more than the cost of fuel. A semi can haul 40,000 lbs in a load. Pork and chicken gets trucked too and it's not as high. Beef is popular and about the only thing a guy can do is go straight to a beef producer and buy direct. Then you either pay to have it processed or do it yourself.
The producer is getting 1.40/lb live weight today and good burger is 6.00/lb. The processors and middlemen are making all the money.

I make out ok sending my own out to be processed, but it's getting harder and harder to make anything off the animals I sell.

That and if diesel stays where it is, cutting and rolling hay for next winter ain't going to be cheap.

Heck, even processing is getting sketchy. Most around here are booked up into next year. I have two sold privately that go to the processor on the 28th, but I can't get any more in. I've never seen it like it is now. Usually you might call a processor and get a kill date a couple weeks out, but they have been booked solid for the last year or two.

Just had a company charge me 51.5% in fuel surcharge. It’s usually 25-30%. Just Chicago to Minneapolis. Price is way up in the last few weeks.
And let’s face it, prices on everything are up.

The commercial corned beef brisket point I stewed yesterday on St. Paddy's Day was in my chest freezer from 2019. 3 years. Price? $1.68/lb. I bought a half dozen of them at the time and that was the last one. I'll just corn my own from now on from whatever I can find on sale.
