We have received some great tomatoes this year from our garden and we are looking into different sauce recipes to make. I tried my hand at making a "BBQ sauce" the other day but it didn't come out exactly right... still good flavor but it was too different to call BBQ, I think I was scared to put too much sugar into it. It came out more like a red sauce ... I stuck to a pretty basic recipe and it feels like it needs some pizzazz

Please share some of your favorite sauce recipes that use garden fresh tomatoes instead of Ketchup for inspiration

Sugar like you said was likely the cause.
As there is a crap load of sweetener in ketchup. If you don't want to add more sugar, add a sugar substitute to make up the difference.
Good luck.
Dan.
