My brother's son is turning 5 in a little over a month. At bedtime, instead of reading a book and being tucked in, he insists on watching BBQ videos and Smoking videos on Youtube. He is currently OBSESSED with anything to do with briskets. (He apparently inherited our family's great love of food)

My brother called me today laughing, because one of the moms at the park asked my nephew "What do you want for your birthday?"
Without missing a beat, he declared "A SMOKER!"
She was very confused... "What are you going to do with a smoker?"
Kid: "Cook briskets!"
Now she's even more confused. LOL

My brother is seriously contemplating getting a smoker now too, as an early birthday gift to his son. (Don't worry, the kid won't actually be doing the smoking or anything like that. Safety first!)

I can't wait to buy my nephew a brisket for his birthday. LOL, strangest gift ever for a 5 year old, but he'll love it! (and yes, I'm the favourite aunt)

That's awesome. My 6 and 3 year old won't let me put them to bed without watching some sort of cooking video on Youtube lol. It's all been smoking things lately, and they both wanted to help with the weekend smoke. 5 years old is a great age to help spread rub around and put probes in the meat and open the door on the smoker.

Thats awesome let them learn both of my boys wanted to help and now they are both doing it professionally one is a chef in a upscale place and the other runs a bbq place (but still cant make food as good as his old man) lol

That is awesome when kids take an interest early on. I have a 2, 3, and 5 year old boys. They actually like to sit with me and watch the reruns of BBQ Pitmasters. It makes me proud lol. I can’t wait till they are able to do more with me grilling and smoking, but for now they love eating all the BBQ I can cook.

Its great to see kids interested in cooking/smoking. too many grow up eating only processed or fast food. I about die when I hear someone say "I hate cooking". cooking is my church. thats my zen place. I can always do better, make something different, make do with what I have and enjoys the fruits of the labor. we never eat out because not much compares (not bragging, thats what my wife says-why pay for lesser quality). we have to eat - why not enjoy it!

They just had the Capitol BBQ Festival at Clarke Field Park near Ottawa in May. To bad you couldn't have gone to that.

We would have loved that! oh well, there's always next year... and there are still a few Rib Fests later this summer that we can go to.

Well it's sure not hard to see why you're the favourite aunt!! I think a brisket is a great B-Day present for a future smoker.
As I see it, every kid should learn how to cook--learning to cook on a smoker just makes it better.

Awesome!! Its great helping a kid develop an interest in cooking. My grandma used to involve me in cooking at a very young age. I clearly remember my first solo masterpiece which was scrambled eggs with broken up bread and bologna in it LOL> I thought it was AMAZING.

I got my son into Grilling with charcoal. Now that he is 26 years old he can cook on that Charcoal Weber Better then most men! Love That he tells people how his steaks taste better then any restaurants you go to and when he cooks for them, and the wife and I .... I have to agree.

I think it is our duty to pass on the things we learn, no matter what it is.
