Do you use spices when corning your beef? or just when you smoke your 'strami?

Yes and yes. For the corned I just used a commercial pickling mix that had pepper corns, corriender seed, bay, some dried chilies, thyme, curing salt #1, brown surgery, etc.
For the pastrami a spice mix of pepper, corriender seed, cumin, and red pepper.

Yum! I'll be doing that soon. I'll cheat on one step though. I'm going to purchase a store bought corned beef and go from there.
That is one hell of a big step to cheat on...and the most important. Do not expect great results. It's not going to happen. Go for it and go all the way. You will be glad that you did.
