Hi,

This is my first post but I have been coming here for answers for a few years now. Great site!

Although it's the coldest day of the year so far here in Ontario I'm already thinking of when I can get my 18.5 WSM going again. I was thinking of switching to a pellet grill this year for a little more "hands off" approach, however my budget really isn't where it needs to be and I reminded myself that I have a perfectly good smoker already. So, my question....

I'm looking at getting a fireboard and would like to have it do some temp control for me. Obviously the Guru DigiQ and Viper fan are the well known way of doing this with a WSM. I really like the WSM adapter they have, having it push the air down towards the coals.

The OCD part of me however likes the idea of using components from the same company so I've been looking at the blower from Fireboard. What I don't like about this setup is I can't aim the incoming air down into the coals and it seems to cover more of the vent holes at the bottom of the WSM.

Is anyone using an all Fireboard setup for ATC with a WSM? If so do you think my concerns are valid or does it just work?

Sorry I don't use any blowers on my WSM - just naturally aspirated, but I'll bump this thread up so someone who does might see it. I hope you find what your looking for.

I'm not a Fireboard user, but do have the DigiQ DX2. When I first got it I used it a lot. I was also using KBB. It worked it's little fan off but held temps really nice.

When I switched to RO Ridge, the DX2 almost became obsolete since it burns so consistently well. I now only use the DX2 on overnighters and as insurance against an unexpected chamber temp drop should the wind kick up. I'll set the vents to give me 225-235F, then set the DX2 for 220F.

The DX2 will overstoke the fire on low temp smokes if you leave the fan slide full open. The fan housing has a slide that allows you to restrict the airflow from the constant speed fan when it clicks on. For low temp smokes I'll set the fan slide about 25% open.

Could I live without it? Yep, but it's real nice to have and definitely turns the WSM into total hands off.
