I was getting that for a while (notifications for posts "you are watching" or when someone quoted you), then it just stopped a couple of weeks ago. No big deal really. The drop-down on the site works fine.

I would be just falling asleep and my phone in the living room would start squaking non stop as some thread started getting popular right at like 11 pm.. well of course it was all these west coast people doing comments. It was only 8 p.m. their time.

Between work and personal, I have four email addresses, all programmed to my phone. I don't have it set for any kind of sound or vibrate. I just check it every so often, otherwise it would be doing something all the time!

I agree, Al. With all the posts, and fewer posts per page, things disappear REAL fast. You look at a post and come back 10 mins later and its gone. Not happy about that. It also seems that not all posts that are replied to end up on the recents page.
I've noticed too that a lot of the old timers don't post anymore.

I think the old timers are still posting, but the posts disappear so quickly that they get very few responses & no one see's them. Unless you bump your own post up constantly it just goes away. So I just let mine disappear.

Does SMF have a place where you can view:
All New threads
All new threads with no reply
Popular threads

I am on another forum as a moderator and we have those areas. It makes finding threads that fall through the cracks easy-espcially the "All new threads with no reply" section.

I started a post on Monday about the same time this OP was started.
It isn't even view able any more.

The closest thing I can see to this is on the main forum page. There are quick links under the carousel for New Posts, Latest Replies, Hot, and Most liked.

Yeah, some of us miss that one. Our old platform had an "Unanswered Posts" list. (Same thing--Different name)
I used to go there every time I got caught up, and answered all questions I was able to.
However I would think these things can be dealt with after Jeff gets everything else tuned up, and running smoothly.

Gee, I guess I'm not alone in thinking that the new format is a PITA. I sure spend a lot less time here since the changeover. Not enough posts on a page with no way to up the number so I seem to spend a lot more time than I should waiting for a new page to load. No way to search just one forum so when I try to narrow down a search I get a lot of useless off subject posts/threads from all over the site. No notifications about new posts to threads I have subscribed to, even a thread I started, yadda, yadda, yadda.

I hope to be starting a new reverse flow smoker project soon so I'll likely spend more time here during that process but otherwise the new format is such a PITA that I avoid the site most of the time.

I've posted a lot the past few days, but have gotten very, very frustrated with all the shortcomings already mentioned, plus many others, like issues with uploading photos.

But I agree that I never feel anymore that I have any sense for whether I've looked at the things I want to see. I never had that feeling with the old format.

Recent is just that ,,, so if someone gets into a thread from 2010 , and 8 years later says " wow looks great " or can I have the recipe ? It goes to the top and new stuff gets bumped down .

I am very disappointed that images do not show on old threads. Before the switch to the new software, I was researching PID controllers and auto setup on propane smokers and found this great thread that members sent me to..
https://www.smokingmeatforums.com/threads/pics-of-pid-temp-controller-on-my-smokers.62689/

Now, I can't view the pictures. Most old threads I look at are the same way. SMF lost a wealth of information with the switch. So sad really. Can nothing be done to salvage the pictures?

It does suck to lose all that info. I think the issue was with the photo hosting site (like Photobucket, read here: https://www.dpreview.com/news/68757...ons-of-photos-online-upsets-millions-of-users) where the images actually live. If I remember correctly one or two of the fairly big ones changed the way to do things and ended up screwing people on a ton of posted and linked to pics.
I don't use those services so someone who did/does can confirm whether this is the case or not.

The salmon lox thread I reference was a victim of this and it is a shame because the pics were very helpful :)

Like Tall said, that picture problem isn't the fault of this forum.
The pictures that were inserted through the forum's software are still fine, including the ones I posted that way.
It was the ones that I ran through Photobucket that had to be replaced since the platform change.
Photobucket screwed everybody that was using it, and now wants $400 per year for their service.

I don't think it's just recent posts either, I believe it's in the sub categories as well. When I posted my last deep dish cook, I looked for it an hour later in the same sub category and it wasn't on the first page, which had posts dated from 6 months ago at the bottom. It magically reappeared the next day.

There is an option to search one forum if you hover over the search button and click more, that opens the advanced search options, where you can specify a specific sub forum to search in. Hope that helps!

I built a couple of retail webpages a few years back and in order to get seen on say a Google search, you had to pay for some sort of web hosting. Essentially it's having a third party constantly having your name slammed on various forums and talk pages, in front of vendors etc. The more you are seen, the higher the ranking on the search page. Those guys that end up on page one of a search spend an amazing amount of time and money to be there. Otherwise you are relegated to page 135, in other words never seen. Most folks don't go beyond page two.

Having said that, this reminds me of that exactly. We have so much input into one site page that it stacks quickly and down the line you go. There really is no answer to it in that format to my knowledge. You can do what I see bear doing, constantly answer every comment to a reply to his post, that way you web host back up closer to the top of the list. But shy of that you disappear quickly.

One thought I had on this was to perhaps break the pages up to where you post more in forum categories. In other words guys that are showing their cooks are not co-mingled with guys wanting to know how best to operate their MES. That way those of us who could care less about MESs can go to the cook page and linger there. At least you are not weeding through all the traffic to find a good recipe idea that someone cooked.

Just a thought. And I don't envy your job Al, it's hard enough just looking for content you are interested in besides having to moderate all that content.

Bear has always tried to answer anyone who comments on any of his Threads.
It's the polite thing to do.
If you have a problem with that, I can make an exception.

Thanks Zeroin but one wonders why when you are in a particular forum you should need to do that. Why not have an option already open on the page to search just that forum?

And, once again, multiple threads I am supposedly subscribed to were updated since yesterday without any notification to me....including this thread....so much for the "improved website". Despite my frustrations though it remains a great resource with great people. I just spend much less time here.

No offense bear, sorry if you took it that way. I was just pointing out that getting yourself noticed by responding is one way you can solve the problem of fading to the background. I think its perfectly legitimate, if you go to the trouble of posting something, it's good to be noticed. Again sorry if you took that as criticism, it certainly was not.
