Very Random Question...

Hopefully someone can help me with my little problem since most of yall have ur stuff setup in the back yard. Well my backyard has been overrun with fleas my black lab is going nuts biting and whats the best way to kill them and prevent them from coming back. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated. Just would like to go in my backyard and not have to worry about it anymore. Thanks Again.

ive read things like that but it only treated like 4-6 weeks...didnt know if anyone else had another remedy that would work longer than that...thanks for the site though greatly appreciated...lucky for u dont have them...they are a pain...

Go get a big bag of Seven Dust, you can even find them at walmart. Use a spreader and lay it down heavy. Load up a old sock with a bunch and pat it all over your dogs dusting him with it, or you can get a shaker and dust him. I have done it with fleas and ticks and you will see the ticks dry up in hours, and the fleas disappear

Diazinon for your yard, any time you are dealing with fleas you have to re apply, diazinon will keep out the grub worms which means the moles will leave your yard as well

For your dog get Advantix II, it works and it works well for 1 month at a time, front line doesn't kill the fleas it mutates them so they can't reproduce, but they are still there, Advantix II will kill fleas and ticks mosquitos biting flies and lice, that come in contact with your dog

I can not say that putting se7en dust  on your hound would be safe, read the label first

actually I just read that diazinon has been taken off the market, but I did a quick check of  lowes lawn treatments in their garden center section and there are some products on there that say they last 3 months or more.... good luck

The environmental physician in me is screaming don't do that to your dog. ( and also be careful if you spread it).

It is a contact poison (and this means it will get absorbed from your lungs also). 

It blocks the normal chemical that causes the nerves in your body to talk to each other.

I did a quick check, and high dose (direct application) in rats caused it to be there for 50 days.

Be careful and use the advantix as mentioned above.

In your house after a good vacuum of everything and get rid of the bag, you can put out a pie plate with soapy water overnight and put a small light over it (goose neck desk lamp)  and if you have dead fleas in the water in the morning you know they are still there.  be persistent, and don't poison your home unless you have to and then stay out for a while and air it out.

1 of my patients is probably permanently damaged from to much flea poison in her bedroom.

You can try this as well.  I used it at my house and worked great.

I never used Dawn dish soap to spray the lawn, but it will kill the fleas on the dog as you are washing him. We had a litter of pups from a stray dog a few years ago and any flea shampoo you buy says do not use on young animals. We called the vet and they said use Dawn dish soap. It worked great!

The only thing I see that could be a problem is their skin drying out if you do it too often as Dawn is a de greaser and may take the oil out of there hair. We didn't have that problem though.

Home Depot & Lowe's have several lawn spray products that work pretty well, but down here in Florida we really have a bug problem so for $25 a month I have a guy that sprays the lawn & gardens with insecticide & fertilizer every month. We never even see any ants & the lawn & bushes are always looking good.

Have used sevin dust for 20 years with no problems. They have diffrent % in them.

The big thing is to figure out what's causing the fleas. I have a small inside dog that goes outside a few times a day. All of a sudden he started having a flea on him every so often.  Called a buddy who is in pest controll. He asked me if we had outside dogs in our yard or next door? No. next was i seeing any wild animals ? yes , ferral cats and coons, He said untill you get rid of the carriers of the fleas you can only treat for them but you will never stop them.

 let's just say i treated the yard , solved the wild animal problem ,treated the yard 2 more times and no more fleas.

I'm in Texas too - contact a bugman; the cost is far cheaper than trying to live with them!  Leave it to a professional, they know their job and will do it right for you, your family, your pets and your property and will save unnecessary spent monies on things that don't work or will harm you and you have them do it and poof, it's done.   In Texas, you save big on a lot of other things, invest in good bug control, its worth it.  And, it gives you a lot more time for Q'ing and frosty cold beverage consumption!

This might sound like a strange answer but bein in constructuon all my life. I have also built a lot of furnture (tables mostly) out of cedar wood I have found that cedar also gets rid of fleas. Just get some cedar sawdust and spend it around your yard and gone the fleas will be.

yeah ill give terminix a call and see what they say...i just like doing as much as i can around the house without having to call others...but i think this is something that is better left up to the pros....thanks again yall for all the reply's...

And also check around with locals too, every area has lots of them and they're all hungry for business.  If they drive a pickup with a hose reel in back, they're a bug man, lol!  We use Southwest Pest Control, but we're partial to them; our son got drunk with the owner on several occasions, then he and his wife woke up in the middle of the night to find their bed infested with thousands of fire ants; he called him on his cell phone and he came right over at 3am and sprayed, but they'd nested into the walls in huge amounts.  J.R. was in a rental house and they had to move out.  The Pest Control owner had just bought another house and was in process of moving out so J R moved in, renting it from him for 2 years.  We finished the lease on our house we rented after moving down here and so did J R as he was building a new house for his wife (at the time) and the pest control owner put his on the market for sale, 1 hour after he did so we signed a purchase offer.  Within 2 more hours he had 5 other offers for the house, lol, but we snagged it and moved in on a 115° day in August (I will never do that again!).  And, when you own a house previously owned by a professional bugman, you know you'll get good service!

The only problem was, with George C. Fassett, Jr. moving out and George C. Fassett Sr. moving in, we drove the mailman nuts for almost a year getting our mail straight!  lol!
