What's up guys? Just purchased my first smoker, a Landmann Trailmaster Vertical Offset charcoal smoker. These are almost exactly the same as the Brinkmann's everyone is familiar with, the design seems to have been picked up by Landmann. Outside of eating smoked meat in restaurants, I have zero experience smoking.

To start off, I need some tips on how to season the smoker and what I can smoke that's easy for a first timer. Also a link to your favorite recipe is greatly appreciated, since there is a lot this forum has to offer. It can get overwhelming.

Thanks in advance,
John from Los Angeles, Ca

Welcome John!  A pork butt or chicken would be my choice for a first smoke.  Both are forgiving with temp swings when learning how your smoker wants to run.  Glad you joined us!

Welcome to SMF!

I would suggest you take the free 5 day e-course.

To season your smoker, spray the inside with Pam & fire it up.

Try to keep it around 250-300 for a couple of hours using charcoal & wood splits.

Here is the link to some great chicken recipes, they are all good.

That's what I would smoke your first time out.

Thanks Al and Mike, I am looking forward to putting the smoker together this week and cure it as you suggested.

Good morning and welcome to the forum, from a hot day for the end of October here in East Texas, and the best site on the web. Lots of great people with tons of information on just about  everything.
