Ok, so I was given a roll of Reflectix which apparently you can buy at your local Home Depot, etc. I always wanted to find a way to insulated my gasser smoker for some help during these cold winter months. Well....here we go. Simply rolled out enough to make a double think blanket around the pup, cutting out slits for the side handles and front door handle. Since I really don't use the door thermometer, it gets buried. Instead, I run one of my Maverick ET-732 leads down the smoke stack opening. Oh yeah what about the top? Put a single layer up there. I did use some aluminum duct tape to reinforce the slits as well as keeping the two layers somewhat held together. Did some funky Velcro fastening to finish it off.

Before I did this I was able to easily use the needle valve to get the flame down to a running 160*. Now that I insulated it, I couldn't easily get the temp down that low without the flame damn near blowing out. In order to keep the flame lit and the temp down, I ended up removing the top layer and open up the insulation door. Couple times, I removed the blanket all together.

Now if I was running the rig with higher normal gasser temps, I wouldn't have an issue but would foresee the knob being turned down lower to compensate the new heat protector.

Heck, didn't cost me anything and I was able to hang out in my shop all day tinkering while doing some Jerky. Life could be far worst.

You must be in NoCal, but I don't see any snow!

How cold does it get where you live?

I bet you save a bunch on gas when your running it a regular temps.

Located 30 minutes south of San Francisco.  Typically coldest in the early morn's are low 30's with the high's being mid 50's.   Heck it was fun to make and yes I hope it would help cut down the amount of gas consumed.
