Ah, but wait, there's still a little yet to go:

I added about a half-cup of this to a couple gallons of water and WASHED THE CRUD out of the steel to get the oil out that had seeped through from the seasoning and initial 'Que.

Then I went to the store and, since VOC paints are banned in California (Tree-hugging b#stards) I bought a bunch of shaker cans of manifold paint.

(They didn't have enough of one type and I hate making extra trips)

So anyway:

Reassembled the whole thing, added some boiler tape to the lip of the firebox door and got the lighting harness all put together:

That's pretty much it  for the build.

From here on, it's all little detail work to balance the temps and practice, practice, practice.

Ah, darn. 

I guess I'm not entirely through with it yet.

Yesterday I made a little bucket for the grease out of 18 gauge to hang off the side:

(I take my wiring and license plate mounting very seriously, BTW.)

...and perfect neighbor Brian came over and discovered a way to keep it locked on for transport:

I'm ready to get the thing inspected and registered...Just as soon as the CHP decides to freaking return my call.

Next up, I need to build the fold-up prep tables on the sides of the smoke chamber and maybe put some drawers in under the smoke chamber for storing tools, dinner ware, spices, etc.

Awesome build spankerchief........Your determination has really paid off and you have a beautiful smoker.... I am welder and have built many things before but dont seem to have that drive anymore.

I am getting to the point where if I want something I would just go buy one but I may have one last build in me if I can find a 250 gal propane tank.

I got the insulation from Grainger. 

It's called mineral wool or stone wool.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mineral_wool)

Grainger sells two pieces of 2" x 2' x 4' for @ $65.(http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/ww...bset&typeaheadSearch.x=22&typeaheadSearch.y=6)

You can find it in little cube form at any hydroponics store as well.(They use it as a potting soil)

That is some fine metal work there. As an ex machinist I appreciate good talent and anal retentiveness. That thing is beautiful. Totally handcrafted.

2 things I really loved about this project though was how you overcame evil in the opening of the grinder wheel packaging.

And 2. You turned a piece of wood on the lathe, slit it and milled the handle profile in it and put it all together with the handmade handle. Dude you're insane. I love it.

So far,it's been a week of getting the runaround from the DMV and CHP inspection office over the registration.

I made a half-dozen phone calls and a couple of trips before finally finding out that in California, you only need the CHP inspection for trailers over 2,000 lbs.

Soooo...

Back to the DMV bright and early tommorrow to spend some quality time with people wearing the same slightly-crazed grin as me.
