Read about that. Just horrible and mostly children if I remember right. So sad.

I think some are still missing. 😢

I’ve heard state officials blaming inaccurate NWS forecast in the wake of them being downsized.
Probably true, but way too early for that … it’s about the victims and their families. 🙏

Just watched the Press Conference with Governor Greg Abbot....death toll is now at 38. So sad...a church summer camp with a bunch of little girls got caught in this...

I heard there were 700 campers there.
Deaths up to 51, still 27 missing. 😭🙏

I think they did predict heavy rain, probably not to that magnitude or intensity.

Assessing what went wrong is how we protect against future tragedies and prevent other people from likewise becoming victims. Doing so does not take away from the enormity of the loss at hand; if anything, we honor and cherish their memory by heeding the lessons to be learned. In the meantime, the storms to come will not wait for us to grieve.

I wonder if the funding/staffing cuts at the Weather Forecasting Services played a part in that? That's what state officials are claiming
NWS was issuing flash flood watches and warnings as early as Thursday afternoon, including very specifically Kerrville, but the Austin-San Antonio office lacks a warning coordination meteorologist, among other positions, as a result of efforts to shrink the federal workforce. As a whole, the NWS has had more departures this year than in the past 15 years combined. The entire research division of NOAA - tasked with improving weather forecasting abilities - is currently slated for elimination in the next budget, including the National Severe Storms Lab in Norman, Oklahoma.

Prayers to the survivors, the pictures are horrifying! I have a buddy who lives close, reached out to him this morning, he and his family are safe.

Yes, my understanding is 560 metereologists were terminated so far, and more coming.

Deaths up to 70 … still 11 missing.
I heard there were 700 campers there … if true I’m actually surprised this wasn’t even more horrific.

I saw a photo of a young family … the 2 daughters and the grandparents perished. We lost a 4-yo grandson … I can’t imagine how those parents go on. 😭

I don’t know how to share it, but this has happened there before, 1987, similar circumstances and (not as severe)outcomes. Memories are too short. We are not quick learners.

I saw a very good video posted by a meteorolgist there.
That area has little or no cell service. A NOAA radio is likely the only way they would have gotten the NWS warnings, which were issued.

I've learned that tropical moisture from TS Barry parked over the area July 4th weekend. Any time that happens, you can expect massive rain total accumulations. That is exactly what happened in this case. Same thing occurred here in Louisiana during the flood of 2016. TS parked for 4-5 days and just churned moisture from the gulf and dumped a massive amount of rain over the area. For us, it was a 500 year flood event. Hard for me to believe what happened in Texas was just a 100 year flood even. How soon people forget......I'm sure it has happened before there....

All weather forecast is done by computer modeling now days. So you obviously need less people to do the work of forecasting, then there is AI to add into the equation. Never mind the fact that that they cannot possibly forecast any weather conditions exactly until they are occurring.

Any way, I saw where George Straight personally donated 3.5 million for recovery efforts and personally went down there to give condolences to the families of victims. He is no doubt the king of many peoples hearts, what a great guy. Big fan

Local official from the area today was saying it's prone to flooding in that part , and has happened more than once . Acted like it was in the last 3 years . Not as severe though ,, but what a tragedy . Saying he thought some might have disregarded the warning if they got one .
Just so sad . Not only the loss , but the scars left on Parents that sent a child to camp .
Makes me choke up .

Straight also has offered to pay some of the funeral expenses. Now I’ve read that Eric Clapton has stepped in and offered to pay for funeral expenses as well. Two giants of music stepping up. Makes my heart full. ‘Merica.

Yes such a terrible tragedy.
Our local congressman had 2 granddaughters at the camp. They survived but their cousin did not.
I visited an aunt in Kerrville about 30 yrs ago. She has since passed but lived about a mile from the river.
Prayers for the rescue teams and families trying to come with the unimaginable loss.

It's a terrible tragedy! Can't imagine what those that have lost loved ones, children, grandchildren are going through... our prayers go out to them, as well as all the people that are helping with the searches and those that helped save people during the flood! Read there was another camp that evacuated 70 campers that were close to the river to higher ground shortly beforehand.
