I have around 550 lbs of pellets to store. I was thinking about storing them is 5 gal buckets with gamma seal lids. My question would It be ok to store them in a outside shed that where I live in Kansas and temperatures could be -20 in the winter or 120 in the summer. Would they stay as fresh sealed in the bucket.

I store all my pellets in pails with gamma seal lids. If you tighten the lid when its warm then try to open it cold its almost impossible to get the lid to break free as the plastic has contracted. The rims ( part you hammer down) don't always seal 100% depending on bucket you use. I run a bead of silicon inside the rim to ensure an air tight seal plus it lubricates the rim making it easier to install before it dries.

Thanks for the recommendations, I had not thought about the plastic contracting with the temperature.

I use the cheap 5-gallon buckets and lids from Lowes. It is just their cheapest lid that is almost like old-school Tupperware. I have had some sitting for well over a year and I just used some last weekend.

I store all my home heating pellets in their original plastic bags in my garage stacked on a skid. Never had a single problem, and I've had as much as 5 tons of pellets in my garage at one time. I also keep my back door to the garage open so the pup can come and go as he pleases. I've seen people store pellets outside in their driveway under trap without any issues. So unless I'm missing something why would you want to store your pellets in 5 gal buckets. I can understand if the bag was opened, but brand new. I'm not trying to be a smart-a$$, just trying to understand.

Yeah, new I keep them in the bag. I get 40lb bags, so I have a good bit to store after opening the bags. That is smoking pellets.

Before I went to geothermal, I used to stack my heating pellets 6 feet high on every wall of our garage with no moisture issues. We did about 5 tons too. It always amazed me that I could stack 5 tons in an hourish.

While I understand it seems silly to worry about storing the pellets when the comes in a package, I went ahead and bought the gamma seal lids with 5 gal. buckets. It is easier to organize and if I just want to fill my AMZPS I don't have to worry about having an open bag. Thanks for all the recommendations.
