My Wood and Concrete Block Smokehouse build

Well.. decided that is was time for a new project and to jump on the smokehouse bandwagon..

First things first:

the concrete slab:

My 6yr old helped me and got to write his name in the concrete.. A little larger than planned and i had to redo the design a little, but no problem!

I played around with the concrete blocks for a while and ended out with this design for the lower part (firebox and base):

half blocks on their side to connect the firebox to the smokehouse:

I am pretty happy with how this first phase turned out! I am currently putting together the wood frame which i am pretty much designing as i go and I asked a friend of mine to weld  up a door with adjustable vent for the firebox which will be pretty big..

I have never built a smokehouse but that looks like it s going to be awesome. Nice work.

Be careful bringing up to temp. That style mortar blocks hold moisture and will break if you get them hot to fast. Is that going to be a fire box or will you transfer coals into it? Great looking build I like the idea.

Think about an upper air inlet in the Fire Box door....   That will allow you to add air flow to the smoke house without adding air to the fire and overheating the smoke house....

I'm thinking that i'll try to not go over 250F in this smokehouse.. Especially in the summer of South Texas that will be a hard thing to achieve.. So i think i will be sticking with coals and wood chips or chunks.. Try not to get i too hot!

This is how far I got with the wood structure last weekend. Using regular premium studs for the frame and will probably use cedar for the outside.

Fire box door installed and I lit a little fire! The smoke is going where it's supposed to and it has good heat coming out of it.
