Thanks for the welcome. Not smoking on anything yet but I have a recycled electric smoker from the dump that doesn’t work. All the electric components have been removed but the trays are still there. Researching here on how to add a heating element and controller for it. Trying do it on the cheap.

Is it a masterbuilt smoker? If you have any pictures it might help. Most parts or "aftermarket" parts you can find on amazon or ebay. I'm sure you could get it rolling without breaking the bank.

Yes it is a masterbuilt smoker but I was thinking of just getting a hot plate seems much easier. Found a few discussions here about it and still reading but that’s the way I think I’ll go. The smoke is missing everything inside and out except the grill grates. It’s really just an empty box right now.

Welcome! Check out some of the A-maze-n products . And some kind of heat source . Youll be up and running in no time! You can get a pretty cheap controller off amazon that will get you started on a budget. Try not and get to fancy with the smoker right off the bat. Get the minimum and get some food in that thing. Once you get a few cooks under your belt youll know what changes you want to make on your smoker.

Again thanks all. I got a heating element from an toaster oven and I’ll start with that and see what happens. Still leaning toward a PID controller though.
