Has anyone else noticed that there seem to be more and more postings on this site that have nothing to do with smoked meats? I can understand postings that have to do with things like side dishes that accompany and enhance a great smoked meat dinner. But just as an example, today on the carousel is a shrimp and chicken paella posting. Nothing about that has anything to do with smoked meat. I guess it's okay if that's the direction this website wants to go but it would seem that there are plenty of other venues for those types of postings. As for me I joined this site because it was focused on smoking meat. I'll get off my soap box now but it would be nice to hear other members thoughts on this.

BBQ is a style of cooking, therefore SMF has always been a cooking forum.

Yes I think SMF has & still is evolving.

It would get pretty old just looking at butts, ribs, chicken & brisket.

But if the only thing your interested in is strictly smoked meat, then just visit those particular sections & forget the rest.

When I first joined I have to admit I spent most of my time in the pork, beef, & chicken sections.

Then I got curious about other things & now I go to all the various forums on here.

I think this is why new forums are created on here from time to time.

I won't respond to the poll as I find the question loaded.

The no-smoke cooking threads are not that many (check today for instance: how many do you find?). The forum is focused on smoking as is.

If no-smoke threads are not worth your time don't use "New posts" (which I agree , is a good tool).

The bbq/smoke classics have been talked to death here. Despite that any question is answered quickly.

We would lose many members if we only talked about smoking here. I don't think I would visit often. Not that my presence is critical.
That are many threads that don't interest me. I don't open them.

I joined this group after leaving another that I had been a member on for many years, I was also a moderator on that site, I left because we had to keep it to what was made on a smoker. They even had issues with electric smokers!

This site is very well rounded and as Al said above, we've worn out how to smoke a butt and prep a brisket. We also pride ourselves on being a teaching forum and open to all.

Recently a new member commented that he can come in here and plan meals for a month, and not make the same meal twice.

Personally, I love seeing the "other" foods, I get tired of eating BBQ and sausage sometimes.

I like the diversity. It's one of the reasons I originally joined, there was more than just smoked meat here.

As mentioned if you want to only read about smoked foods, only visit those sub forums.

I'll be making a turkey today, in the oven. Can't eat smoke all the time!

One thing we all have in common, we love smoking meats and sharing our recipes and techniques.  With that being said I have no issues with other forums on the site to help other members discover different things other than just smoking.  This site turned me on to Sous Vide cooking, and I got my first one around 10 days ago.  Been having a blast discovering a new cooking technique that I can combine with smoking to make a delicious and different way of improving the basic meals we have been smoking for years.  Stay tuned, as I will be attempting SmokinAl's recipe for Sous Vide Pastrami, looking forward to that!

I think it's fine, as long as there are separate Forums for various things.

That way if you aren't interested in one or two Sub-Categories, you can just avoid them.

It's all cooking in one form or another.

I like the variety. When I first joined, it was of course to learn more about meat smoking, and it seemed other sites weren't as laid back and friendly (as in, wood and charcoal is the only way to smoke, period and this is the only good way to do this or that, period).
I'm not an internet surfer and like being able to just go to one forum for everything from smoking to sausage making to Sous Vide to just plain interesting conversation.
Not smoking anything today, but the Corned Beef we have in the crock pot I made myself from info on this site.
Anyone have any CB & Cabbage tricks?
Dan

I used this forum for several years before joining. Although the majority of threads are on smoking, I've gotten numerous recipes on nonsmoked products here. This forum has even gotten me into curing meats, which is my current "addiction". As long as it maintains it's primary character as a site dedicated to all things smoked, I don't have a problem with the other subjects. I like the "one stop shopping" aspect.

I knew how to grill and smoke before I joined here . I never expected to learn the many ,, many other  great things that I have .

This is just an amazing forum! There literally is "something for everybody" on here!

It is just FUN for me to collect the various different recipes and the Different Cooking Techniques! So many can be blended with the Smoker, and others compliment different things you can make!

Most of the recipes are easy to adapt and customize, with perhaps the recipes for Curing meats. maybe the ones you have to be very conscious of what you are doing.

I love learning different recipes, and the Techniques

Hmmmm............apparently it was my post on the recent paella I made that has offended you. For what its worth I made sure to make it clear in the thread title what the thread was about. That way anyone not interested in paella could just pass the thread by and not have their sensibilities injured.

In my defense; all other food related threads I've started have been done on my kamodo and smoke was definitely involved. Of course its really hard to cook anything on a charcoal rig without smoke being involved.

Also, and no small thing, I had originally intended to cook the paella in question on my kamodo, but decided against it as the wind was really blowing and it didn't look like a nice day to be out on the patio. Besides, the sangria pitcher was in the kitchen.

We at SMF do not live by Smoke alone! You need Judy's Buns, Bear's Tater Salad, Dave's Pickled Eggs, Disco's Hot Italian Sausage...Need I go on?...JJ
