I was just surfing around looking for a price on a therma pen, but found this one from Taylor, it claims it is an instant read.

Just looking to see if anyone has used one. They say it a new model.

I have a very similiar taylor commercial i got for a steal(75% off sale) at restaurant depot years ago...no complaints after many uses....

I have a couple thermapens as well...no complaints on any of them.

Taylor is a good brand of thermometer. I would say you would be very satisfied with their product...

America's Test Kitchen just did a test on lower priced thermometers (they love the thermapens but wanted something priced for the backyard guy) and they loved the CDN brand thermometer, they tested it and in 6 seconds it was done, it looked like this one DT450X or the DTT450

I am looking for a therm to double check sausage with.
I figured with the mavericks, the PID, the other wireless ones that I have I would be covered. But toward the end of the smoke I wanted to test all of the sticks in the top and bottom and had to keep closing the door so I would not loose all of the heat.

I will eventually end up with a therma pen sort of goes with my snap-on tool mentality. I just wanted to see if there is a better bang for the buck.

Got one of these (Taylor) for Christmas from the BIL - He said Lowes had them on clearance at around $10-12 - Have used it 3 times so far and it works very well - I like the backlit display and hold features.

It's the tool of the future around here. I have seen them and I alos kow alot of folks here that use and swear by them. I still use old school probe units because one I have a few of them and two I haven't bought a thermo pen either.

i've used talor for years........can't go wrong but you should be able to find them for a little less $$.

i got a red taylor (weekend warrior) like that one at lowes for $13, it has a backlight and can be recalibrated

works well for me

This is the red Taylor digital thermometer, model 806E, aka the "Weekend Warrior" as noted on the handle. I paid about $14 for it at Lowes this past Saturday. I have only used it to check actual meat temp once (yesterday), and it seemed to work pretty good. It is NOT instantaneous - it appears to get fairly close in 7 to 10 seconds. Quick enough for me.

I did check it in a slush of ice water - measured 32.5 degrees F - within 1/2 a degree of 32, so seems to be accurate to boot.

I like the way the thermometer base snaps into the cover to give the thermometer "extra" reach. Also like the fact that it is pretty compact and lightweight with a lanyard. I simply placed the Taylor in my pocket when I was going out to check on the meat. I'm always smoking in the dark, so the backlight feature was very convenient - very easy to see and read in the dark. Here are a couple of photos.

Also bought a couple of analog thermometers I saw at Sam's Club last weekend. I think I paid about $5 for a pack of two of these thermometers with pen style cover and sleeve clip. Can't ever seem to have too many thermometers to check my meat!!. I haven't checked them for accuracy yet.

They're made by "Cooper" - see the photo's below. Anyway, for $2.50 each, my expectations are low - at some point I'll check 'em in an ice water bath to see how close they are. Hopefully they're close enough.

Thanks,
