Freezer Running Warmer

I have a Kenmore upright freezer around 10 years old. It is running about 17 degrees. It usually is about -5. It is maintaining 17. There is no adjustment knob. I guess its time for a new one.

Edit: I think I found a the adjustment knob on the lower back. I was looking for sensor and I turn thin round thing that might be controller. It had ice on it and when I went to scrap it off it turned and freezer came on. Will wait and see.

Might be an air flow issue . Maybe the defrost cycle isn't working , or the evap is froze up .
I just bought a new Garage ready fridge / freezer to replace the old Kenmore ( Whirlpool ) I had out there .

I think I decided its time for new one. Thinking of pulling the trigger on this Freezer $650 today.

The one I was running in the garage I bought when I was 25 . I'll be 66 in December . Paid $500 at the Sears outlet scratch and dent . Never , ever gave me any trouble , 40 years old . Still running , but figured it was time . Getting it cleaned up and gonna put some paint on the doors and take it downstairs .

My new one is a top freezer fridge . Never put much thought into garage ready , but if that's where you're putting it , huge difference . Just in the amount of insulation I can tell is in there . Better control too .
GE brand . Some good sales right now too . $799 plus &25 rebate .

Then Thermoworks had a 50% off on this moniter .
RT-8100 .

$650 today.

Its in the house. Been running for few hours since turned the dial but still at 17. I have monitors on all my fridges and freezers. I will take another look. I have to much money in food in there to risk it. Not sure if I should leave it set like I put it and let it keep running or not. Want to get something soon!

I looked at mine like this , " If that thing quits do I have a place to put what's in there "
The answer was no . So I got a new one .
Keep in mind , depending on what you get , it could be a few days or weeks before you get it .
Then takes another 24 to 48 hours to get stable temps .
I kept the old one running while the new one was settling in .
At 17 degrees , full of frozen food , you just might see that number increase in coming days .

Is it an “Eventemp” with the air channel in the back of the compartment? The fan could be frozen up.

I looked that one up on the GE websites . Says holds 32 degrees or less for 48 hours in the event of a power outage .
It's a little smaller than the one you showed above , but I personally would go with the GE .

If the one you have looks like the one @WaterRat posted , it's probably frost built up on the evap , and stopping the evap fan blades .
If so , it's only going to get worse .

If you block the airflow where the fan is, it WILL freeze up and probably "kill itself".

Leave pathways all through the freezer so air can flow freely. I learned that the hard way as it was stuffed full front to back/top to bottom. Fan replaced and increased air flow and it never iced up again.

I loved the Sears scratch and dent store. I bought by first washer and dryer there 34 years ago, move them a couple times, left them at my house in SLC when we moved back to CO. Bomb proof. I think I replaced a couple $2 parts over the years. This house cam with GE garbage, less than 5 years old and died. Its not like it used to be.

I went up to stores and nobody has any on display. I pulled the trigger the GE 21.3. Man that sucker tall. I wont be keeping any 12 packs on top of that sucker. Wish I could do haul off but need to keep old one until new cooled down. I will probable run extension cord to another room until I get rid of old one as I have a Side by Side in that same room and a regular fridge couple feet away around the corner. Than the French door in kitchen and they all full. I am ban from buying anymore food!!! Thanks for help. I would of bought that Insignia.

You'll like that I bet . GE is one of the higher rated brands for fridge / freezer . That's the size I like for an extra .

Lol . This thread made me dig deep into the chest freezer in the basement . Not as full as it was , but still a bunch of stuff in there . Pulled 2 bottom round roasts out , 10 pounds of ground beef to move up stairs , 5 lbs of chicken wings , and some bags of frozen chicken " stuff " .
All kinds of sausage in there too . Homemade and store bought .
An up right would be easier for knowing what you have , that's for sure .

Make sure that is a 14g (12g is better) extention cord if you do. Power draw on a 16 is too much for it to safely handle (especially if it's a long cord).

Our Samsung french door fridge/freezer had this issue - the circulation fan in the fridge freezing and stopping. I found a YouTube video and there is a kit to add a secondary heating element to the defrost circuit. Seems to have fixed it for us. I have not seen a video or kit for the freezers though, but if the ice is not defrosting and building up to the point it stops the circulation fan from spinning, that's the same issue.

This is the video for the french door unit but it shows how the supplemental heater is installed. You might be able to find the part?

Our Samsung french door fridge/freezer

I have a 2017 French door bottom freezer Samsung . What a nightmare .
With the help of Mike I found the kit to do most of the fixing . New ice maker , heated drain tube , new main board , drip " fingers " for the ice maker ecap , and the extended heating tab that you're talking about . I got the kit and replaced all the parts . Problenm is to do it right you need to shut it down and let it completely thaw ( depending on how bad it is ) . The tab heater that you're talking about worked .
Mine's a different set up than a side by side , but the drain foix was in the kit .
