My wife does Weight Watchers and strangely she started going the wrong way when I started my smoking hobby. I need some good low fat/low cal recipes to keep my wife from throwing the smoker out. I was looking/drooling at cowgirls Canadian bacon after reading an article today about high protein/low fat foods and seeing Canadian bacon on the list. Any other suggestions out there or anyone else doing WW?

Thanks,
Doug

P.S.
I already suggested she stay out of my beer!!

Amazing Buckeye! You just said what I was thinking! My wife has been doing the whole "diet" thing as well.

I hope someone has some tasty suggestions.

Smoked whole turkey breast

Smoked Chicken

ABT's use lower fat turkey bacon and stuff them with chicken or turkey and use low fat cheese.

Meatloaf with ground turkey instead of beef.

You can even make a lower fat fatty using turkey sausage, mixing it with ground turkey and stuffing it with low fat cheese and sauteed apples and onions.

Lots of possibilities.

Suggestions? Rich just nailed it. Smoking your food has nothing to do with the caloric intake. Are you asking for low calorie recipes? My wife collects recipes and I might be able to find one or two.

I have done both chicken and turkey, but my favorites are the ribs, brisket and fatties!!! She loves the grilled veggies, but I was hoping for some unique low cal alternatives to keep her out of my ribs....I mean help her stay on her diet.

LOL! Doug, it sounds like you already have it covered. Eat canadian bacon and stay out of your beer.

I'm not familiar with WW, is jerky allowed?

My wife says that lean meats are allowed and encouraged, however the standard practice of wrapping in bacon to keep them moist is not so encouraged. I guess I will have to work up some creative injections and mops for loins and lean cuts of beef. We have our own beef that probably has less fat than most in the hamburger, so some creative spicy meatloafs may be in our future as well.

The food is the same regardless of the way its prepared. Choose healthy options and smoke them like nobodys watching. She can still do points, just add the sauces to your finished product...AFTER your sweetie has taken her portion. You will end up on the couch right quick my friend, so handle this gently and with a smokers poise. You can do it...

Ron,
Thanks for the good ideas. I have made deep fried poppers before, so I guess I could sell the low fat ABT's as an improvement over those.

And I buy her light beer.

A long time ago, I started working out with weights. My goal was to reduce body fat percentage, while maintaining my weight. I started my own version of the Atkins diet- low carbs, high protein, didn't pay attention to fat levels.
I drank alot of protein shakes (Myoplex Deluxe); ate alot of beef; ate alot of peanutbutter; and drank Diet Dr Pepper instead of the regular. I went from 165-lbs, 15% body fat to 165-lbs, 7% body fat in 3 months. My personal trainer told me to go back to 10% body fat, as I was getting to a unhealthy level for a working man.

My personal opinion is that low carbs is what is needed. Carbs convert the fat that you eat into body fat. As long as you moderate your carb intake, weight loss is possible. Most of my family (parents, sister, bro-in-law) followed the Atkins diet by the book, and lost quite a bit of weight.
Think about it- when the "food triangle" was thought of, what happened? Everyone started getting fat- finally becoming obese. Eat alot of breads- ha....and get fat. I eat mostly meat; some starches (potatoes mostly); very little bread; and almost no veggies. The only veggies I eat are green beans, corn, and some things that are actually a fruit (peppers, okra, etc.).

Anyone else share my thoughts/opinions?

There are 2 different WW plans. Which one?? There is the point plan which most know about and there is the core plan.
Core plan allows you to eat certain things in as much quanity as you can eat. Just have to stay away from anything using processed flour.
So all the meats should be good.

Instead of using bacon try roasted red peppers. Marinate them in some balsamic vinegar if you like and wrap the loin with them. I use them on my turkey fatties to keep the turkey meat from drying out and it works well.

i feel your pain

but here is some ideas

diet ABT's - non fat cream cheese, i mix in some non fat cheddar cheese-red pepper flakes. i just eliminate the bacon

i smoke chicken breasts all the time, instead of wrapping with bacon for moisture, i wrap with soaked cheesecloth, spritz alot with apple juice

smoked turkey breast done the same way

pork loin that has been trimmed of the fat cap, no rub

meatloaf, i use x-lean for my missus, and spritz alot to give it moisture , i add alot of stuff to meatloaf to keep it moist, onions, green red and yellow pepper and lots of garlic

those are few i can think of right now

as for using turkey sausage, you really have to watch the fat content in those, even some ground turkey has more fat in it then ground beef. my missus is on a low fat/low calorie diet as well and i have read more nutritional guides on the meats purchased than i care to remember..lol

I second the fish comment (also add any seafood to this). White wines are great for marinades and sauces (with garlic and shallots).

As a final serving sauce, try thickening remaining/reserved white wine marinade (after boiling it, of course) with milk and a tbsp or two of cornstarch. Add salt, pepper and fresh dill for flavour. Heat until thick. And spoon over fish or seafood after you pull it off the grill. It looks and tastes great. Add cheese if it's not quite rich enough for your liking.

Here's a picture of it over Tilapia filets and asparragus.

I'm not on WW and actually like it.
