Not quite that low, but I remember when it was $.32 a gallon. And they would wash your windows, and check your oil and air pressure, as well. Green stamps and giveaways were common, too.
Geez, I sound old.

I can tell you from years of working as a pump jockey there was a local guy that would pull into the station about once a week. He would buy $1 of gas and then he'd ask us to check his oil, air pressure in all tires and adjust accordingly, washer fluid top off and a clean windshield. No tip.

We had a nickname for him but I can't say it here

I haven't seen a full service gas station in 30 years.

Red balls that you got to put on your radio antenna, though it was really cool!
Hess : Xmas trucks Dudes wore all white uniforms.
Mobil : Mister Dirt , he was Cool also.

Esso or Exxon , whichever it was then. Not only had the " tiger in tank " sticker, but had actual tiger tails that could be hung out of the gas tank lid.

My Grandad went to work for the Carter Oil Company, around 1920 at the age of 17 yo. Carter was a subsidiary of Standard Oil of New Jersey, which became Esso ... and eventually Exxon.

He retired in 1961. He worked for the same company his entire life, only job he ever had. That does not happen today.

It was near Newark Airport.
It was BayWay in Linden,NJ.

My Buddy worked for Mobil , right after college. Then he got an offer from Exxon.
Ironically he got active time from working for Mobil! It was retroactive, vaca, benefits, ect. When they became Exxon/Mobil.

I haven't seen a full service gas station in 30 years.

Not sure how 'full service' they are, but as I believe, New Jersey law forbids customers from pumping their own gas...

I worked at several gas stations back in my school days and I was also a member of VICA in high school. Every week we had to fill out a work report and in the job description I always put "Petroleum Transfer Engineer". My teacher and classmates always got a kick out of that.

At that time, Ethel 93 octane was an expensive .60/gal and I bought gasoline a couple of dollars at a time

There are still some people around here that buy 3 or 5 bucks worth at a time I laugh every time I see it done. Sure can't get far I wouldn't think seems they are never driving a little car or motorcycle.
Remember when you couldn't fit 5 bucks worth into a motorcycle even if it was slap empty

When I worked at Texaco , a guy came walking in with a gas can one day . Filled up the can , and off he went . Half hour later he drives up to the pump .
I go out , and he hands me the can and says " Put 2 dollars in the car , and 2 in the can so I don't run out again "
True story .

Not gas related , but 2 gals pulled in asking for directions . The owner told them " You can't get there from here " She screamed at the driver " I told you !! " Lol .

Another thing he did was tell people asking for direction. Go out and make a right ,, 2 blocks make another right , come to the stop sign , make a right , then when you get to the light make a right .
That would take them around the back of the station , and dumped them out in front of the station . Lol . We got the one finger wave on that one .

Going to California – Phillips 66, Kinder Morgan Plan New ‘Gateway’ to Move Refined Products West​

Less than two months after ONEOK unveiled plans for a big new refined products pipeline from El Paso to Phoenix, Phillips 66 and Kinder Morgan have proposed an even more extensive project of their own that would enable refined products flows from the St. Louis area to Southern California. The company’s newly proposed, 1,300-mile Western Gateway Pipeline — now the focus of a binding open season — would involve the construction of a greenfield pipeline from Borger, TX, to Phoenix and the reversal of part of Kinder’s existing SFPP pipeline system to move product west from Phoenix to Colton, CA.

• Arizona's demand for refined products is strong. Arizona has been among the fastest-growing states over the past 25 years, with the vast majority of its population growth (and demand for refined products) coming from the Phoenix and Tucson metropolitan areas. Total Arizona demand for refined products is expected to rise by about 10% over the next 10 years (from ~320 Mb/d to ~350 Mb/d), with gasoline and diesel demand staying flat (at ~190 Mb/d and ~90 Mb/d, respectively) and demand for jet fuel increasing from ~40 Mb/d to ~70 Mb/d by the second half of the 2030s.

• Southern California refinery output is declining. Virtually all of Arizona’s refined products supplies are piped in, just over half from Southern California via the 515-mile Kinder Morgan West Line from the Los Angeles area to Phoenix and just under half from refineries to the east via the 400-mile Kinder Morgan East Pipeline from El Paso to Tucson and Phoenix. But Southern California’s refinery capacity has been steadily declining and Phillips 66 plans to shut its 139-Mb/d Los Angeles refinery complex by the end of this year. Given the relatively high cost of either importing refined products into California or producing them in the state’s remaining refineries, there’s been a declining incentive to pipe gasoline, diesel and jet fuel east to Arizona.

Note: The Phillips 66 refineries are capable of producing AZRBOB, CARBOB, conventional and premium gasoline, military and commercial grades of jet fuel, and EPA and CARB ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD). Esso which was earlier. from now EXXON.
Their motto was put a Tiger in yur tank, had decals to put near yur gas cap.
It was a tiger coming from the car.
My great Aunt worked for them back in the day.

Never really pay attention to the price of gas or diesel... all I know E does not stand for enough! But this thread started in 2011 with gas @ $3.60, I'll have to check tomorrow if I get away from the farm.
