I like to kick back with my two sons and regale them with stories about cooking BBQ with my Granddaddy, and have a few cold ones!
My Granddaddy was a tea-totaler, so there was no alcohol around when we did our cooks, but there was always a group of men singing and playing the mouth-harp (harmonica) and the guitar and banjo! The lack of alcohol is most likely what kept debates friendly instead of them turning into drunken brawls! There was always a fish fry going on during the cooking of the pork and it was my job to shovel the hot coals from the barrel to the "cooker" which was nothing more than expanded metal atop rows of cinder blocks laid out just for the occasion with loads of high quality pork butts on top! It was an all night affair and the ladies would swoop in the next morning to chop (mince) the pork (cause that's what we did then) while the men napped for a couple of hours before the main festivities. It was an honor to participate!
I never knew what the ladies did while we were all outside cooking that wonderful pork BBQ but the next day there were always casseroles and sides to spare...collard greens, baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad...you name it, we had it!
Ohh but what I wouldn't give to have my sons experience what I did as a youngster...perhaps it's time to revive old methods and traditions! Perhaps we should not let the past slip out of reach for the next generation....
So, for me and my Granddaddy, it wasn't a stall and we didn't dread it...it was an opportunity to fellowship with friends and family, to play games and sing songs, to teach young boys what it means to be a man. Manhood is what you learn from your elders that you can pass along to the younger generation!
I know... LOL. This just felt like the right time and place to relive and revive the good times...there was no stall!!!! THERE IS NO STALL!!!! There are only opportunities to connect with loved ones during the age-old tradition of cooking meat over fire.
Sorry if I bored you...get over it!
And get those kids out helping and building memories!
