I usually enjoy a grilled cheese sandwich about twice a year. Sometimes with tomato soup.

In the last month I have had it three times because I find it much better this way.

First off I kept seeing videos of using Mayo on the outside. I never heard of this until recently and thought it sounded weird but once I tried it I will do it no other way. It gives so much better of a consistency in the browning of the bread.

the next one I tried out of boredom but it turns out it made these things taste way better.

My wife picked me up some Italian prosciutto wraps with cheese from Costco. I like to snack on them but decided to unwrap a couple and place them in the sandwich.

So I use real butter on the inside of the bread and mayo on the outside. I unroll two of the prosciutto wraps on one side and two slices of American cheese on the other. I place it together first then into a large pan on medium low heat and toast each side for a few minutes.

If the cheese does not quite melt enough by the time the bread looks perfect toss it in the microwave for about 15 seconds and it will perfect it.

I did not have it with soup today but when I do I no longer use Campbell's. I have found Progresso Tomato Basil to make a way better match for a grilled cheese sandwich.

Looks delicious! I agree. Progresso tomato basil is leaps and bounds better than Campbell's.
I've been using mayo over butter for years. It really makes a difference.

Looks great . We're soup and grilled cheese junkies here . 2 to 3 nights in the winter . Usually make a big pot , and have already had it 3 times in the last 2 months .

We like salami or the sandwich pepperoni on the grilled cheese . Huge differemce .

It is really good with Seltzers Lebanon bologna.

Looks good.
Meat always amps up a grilled cheese.
I've even grilled bacon, tomato & cheese sandwiches.

Tried using mayo and went back to butter.

One of the local joints has a grilled cheese cheese burger with tomato soup to dip it in..... Man it is just good!

We have a joint here that does that as well. Delicious. But man. That's a huge burger!!
Edit: Just went to their site. They are permanently closed. Bummer.

Looks and sounds great Chris.

I have seen and heard of the Mayo idea, Just never tried it yet. Will happen.

And we are also tomato soup loves with the grilled cheese.

And I love to fill with what ever sliced meats or bacon that I have going on in the fridge .

I'm a mayo convert for grilled cheese. Way easier to spread and more consistent even toasting.

I've not tried mayo.. but I will... For mine, I add a meat. usually ham... But then I also put a fried egg on it as well... I'll break the yoke and stir it around... But I only cook it enough to leave it slightly runny...

PS. You'll need a whole sheet of paper towel not the half sheets...

Looks kill'er, Chris.
Ghee or bacon grease works better than butter, I like using mayo as well, we also use mayo or bacon grease on quesadilla's or to brown burrito's and wraps. Yeah, I have a bacon grease can with a strainer right next to the stove, If I don't make bacon for a while I just buy a tub of bacon up.

My wife LOVEs tuna melts, I can't stand hot tuna🤮, but when I make them for her I use Mayo or bacon grease to brown the bread for her.
I like using bacon grease to brown bread, it gives it a nice flavor, it's my go too lately. I've been using bacon up for everything lately, sautéing veggies and making roux for everything.....I use my homemade instant roux with a little bacon grease, it is ready to use in seconds.

NICE. We rock this pretty much every week during fall/winter. Mayo trick is nice but best is to use better cheese. While my wife worked at our school kitchen she got some stuff to take home at end of year. One of which was gov't cheese. HOLY CRAP. It's 1000x better than Kraft slices. It's Land O' Lakes Extra Melt. Can be found in 5lbs slabs at GFS. If you're lucky your local GFS sells slices of it or it's generic equivalent. Worth seeking out if really into grilled cheese.

We're die hard Campbell's tomato but it's made with 50/50 milk/water and a nice splash of dry sherry. I am known to grind some fresh pepper on mine and have wife make the sandwich with black forest ham lunchmeat. Also like them made with mozz and sandwich pepperoni.

You're bringing me back to my childhood. when my Dad was laid off the Plumbers Union would give him huge blocks of Government cheese. Which made the best grilled cheese and mac and cheese.
