Pretty much everyone on SMF that has an MES uses the AMNPS b/c it makes good TBS!  (initialism overload!)

And once you get the hang of it, you can really control the amount of smoke it churns out. (light one end; light both ends; light both ends and the center; and play with the levels of how much pellets you pour into the AMNPS channels/troughs)

I have a gasser so I still like using chunks of wood when hot smoking, but I use my AMNPS for cold smokes like cheese, salt, and coming soon....bacon!
i got my MES on tuesday, primed it that evening and used it for the first time wednesday. tomorrow i have a loin to do and I just ordered an AMPS maze off amazon. i like that i can light it and not worry about chips in the MES. thats kind of lazy compared to how much babysitting i did on the brinkmann bullet smoker from walmart for 40 bucks.

the only drawback is the cost of lumberjack pellets

I think you'll find it well worth the price of the pellets.

The Combination of the MES and an Amazing smoker is truly a Match made in Smoker Heaven.

thanks bear,  after seeing all the feedback on these things i considered it a no brainer to get one. now, do i still use chips in the MES as well?

That was my original plan---To throw a couple chips in when the AMNPS burns out, but instead, I just start with enough Pellets or Dust to get it done, and then separate the burning from the unburned, and save the unburned for another time. I get about 3+ hours per row, and 9 to 11 hours on a full load.

Burning chips in the chip burner is just too uneven for me---Too heavy to nothing, and anything in between.

All I use my MB gasser for now is cold (or warm with a hotplate) smoking. With a mailbox setup, I think tubes work great, though the tray sounds more versatile.
You're going to love making your own bacon!!

never mind, i googled and it led me back here to the precise post of using a mailbox. cheap and innovative.
