A hunter got up early on a cold morning, grabbed a rifle and went to sit up in a tree.

He enjoyed a beautiful scenic view.

A young buck stepped cautiously out of those woods and peered intently at the tree in which the hunter sat.
He knew from past experience that danger lurked in such places.
He stepped and stared, and snatched a mouthful of fresh greens, this repeated whilst the hunter dared not move, not even breathe while in view of this wary creature.
Then the buck made a mistake and turned to look at a noise within the woods.

BANG!

That hunter, he shot true and did not miss.
But deer are tough and away he tore into the woods, yet he left a trail.
A trail the hunter followed till he found that buck with his tail in the dirt.

A never was there a happier hunter.

And later that day, just for good measure, that hunter went out and killed that buck's doe.

That's Awesome !

Nice!

Fresh venison is hard to beat!

But did one "kill" that buck's doe, or harvest it for his larder?

Killing is one thing, harvesting is quite another...

Consider this, my peppered friend...

Gotta kill'em to harvest'em, and I enjoy the hunt/kill as much as the cooking/eating.

Thanks, it was a great hunt... Finally.
You need tags for deer in OR?

Yep. Even for General season. The last General season hunt I did there were 3,000 tags for the unit I hunt. More hunters than deer. No fun.

It's also a point based system. So in order to get good hints you have to have lots of points.

I black powder hunt and haven't drawn a tag in several years.

Ouch, that sucks.

That really sucks. We have draws for elk and moose but there are so many white tails that everybody that wants a tag can get one with no problem.

Was curious, do you have wild hogs in your area to hunt?  Would surely be fun to hunt also, but maybe not the kind of wild Pork meat/fat you would want to mix with your venison?

Oh yeah, hogs are thick as ticks on deer.
Great eating as is, but to use any fat I'd render it first.
