Well my 2024 hunting trip is in the books!
I managed to bag 3 does of medium, large, and x-large sizes :D

As I've stated in previous years hunting posts, I go out to meat hunt on some hunting ranches that cater to people who want to bag a big expensive buck.
These properties are part of programs managed at the state level where they report their animal numbers and such and in doing so are given tags that the hunters on the property use instead of the personal individual hunter tags the average Joe gets when they buy their hunting license. Also their seasons are longer and rifle can start earlier and go longer as well when in these state management programs.

These places have thousands of acres of land and tons of animals and every year need help reducing numbers of the does and cull bucks (spikes, 3 points, bad horned deer, etc.). So I go and pull off as many meat animals as I can fit in my freezer (and afford) and this is the case again this year.

Again this year I am not taking off work to process so I took it to a trusted meat processor to just give me straight grind. I will make sausage, jerky, burger, etc. all my self. I just can't sacrifice the time off from work since I do not get paid for it and will not save more money to process myself than what I would lose taking time off work hahaha.

Now with all that context given, lets take a look at some of the animals I saw while out there. I didn't get too snap happy with the camera but I managed to snag a few fun pics.

Good luck to all you hunters and I hope you get a freezer full of meat! :D

Nice job C man.
I'd be curious the difference in taste of a Texas venison versus a Minnesota venison.
Sorry don't have to offer in exchange and I'm not begging.

Very nice! Let us know how many pounds of meat you end up with...I'm guessing around 100# total.

Very nice black buck and whitetail buck! Congrats on your take. The deer club has 4 does down as of now during October bow season. Things get into full swing middle of November...and of course, our big processing is always in February...

Congrats, nice batch of tasty venison !
Thanks, it sure will be :D

Oh it will depend on the area and what they are eating. Deer that are eating lots of corn taste great.
I think them eating acorns is good to go too. Other food sources may not be so great lol :D

Thanks! The meat processors scale was giving him fits but with innards out and hide still on, they totaled about 184lbs. It seems rule of thumb is you get about 33% (1/3rd) of that in meat so that gives me 61 pounds so I'm thinking 60-65lbs would be a good guess. BUT I think the scale was measuring a little low because the x-large doe was only like 5 more pounds than the large??? but size was noticeably different.

We'll see :D

I hope the deer club keeps em coming and I look forward to your yearly meat processing post after hunting season :D

What a trip!! Looks like you'll be set for awhile, Carlo!

Beautiful buck, for sure and while it may be too many points to count, it would definitely be too many dollars to count to shoot him...😄

Very nice, such a good feeling knowing your freezer will be nice and full 👍

Very nice haul! That's a heck of a rack on that buck
Thanks! Yeah that guy had a million points. You can't tell in the picture but there were a lot of littler points between the big ones in many cases.

Thanks! Yeah the freezer will be full again. There is meat from last year I didn't get to but that is because it was vac sealed in like 8-9lbs at a time and takes like a week to defrost so I didn't do well in setting aside the time to defrost and work it. The new meat will be in 1-2 pound ground bags and I will work those big packs down in about 2 runs of jerky or sausage. I just have to find the time, which is not going to be easy with the holidays coming up and how my current calendar looks hahaha :D

Nice harvest , and great pics .
Thanks! I'm glad I got to snap these.

Thanks! Yeah a good full freezer is nice. I think Hot Links and Jalapeno and Cheese sausage will be the 1st on the menu though I'm almost out of venison brats which is an easier and faster sausage for me since there is no smoking :D

Excellent job doing your part. In two weeks, I'm also headed to Texas Hill County for a doe management weekend. What meat processor do you use?

cheers
Oh nice, I wish you the best of luck!!!

I'm suing Wild Country Game Processing in Gainesville, TX.
They never mix animals/meat. The animal never touches the ground (hanging rail system from intake through all coolers and working areas). You get only your animal back. They tag each animal with processing instructions so that it never gets mixed up or lost with your own animals or others when processing.

Things you would think are no brainers but not really how all processers have worked or do work lol.

Just getting the shank + heal meat removed and vac sealed and then the rest all ground up with no fat added so I can easily turn it into sausage or jerky myself with whatever fat I have/want (beef or pork on hand).

I had a processor as that for top quality in an older locker that had a rail system.
Unfortunately the guy retired and his son-in-law that was supposed to take over the business ... didn't ... F$%&
Local processor is a friend and I don't trust them for anything beyond a grind. Friend had meat sticks made and his first bite was to spit out a lead bullet. Friend removed bullet from his deer before bringing in to process.
Hard for me to comprehend. I've neck shot through and through on every deer harvested.

Nice haul and gonna be tasty!

Keith
Thanks Keith! Yeah it will be tasty when I get it back and start making stuff out of it :D

It sucks to lose something like a reliable high quality service like that.
That suuuucks about the lead. It extra sucks knowing it wasnt even his own lead bullet lol.

I switched to non lead a while back for the performance, weight retention, and the fact that I take 3-5 animals a year so no need to eat lead dust or pieces if I can avoid it. Those Barnes bullets I load are pretty damn accurate. The Hornady non-lead.... are a pain to get shooting well and I have learned my lesson, a couple to three times, to just pay more money for the Barnes. I just buy when they are on sale around the holiday says weekend.

My loads could do neck shots no problem if I do my part. It just depends on the stand that I'm in and how sturdy I can get. This time around I was in a less than ideal stand BUT the rest where I could put the fore end of the rifle stock was good and the barrel was free of resting on anything in the window ( a big no-no for the barrel to rest on stuff). I used my primo's monopod shooting stuck to support my back shooting elbow so I had everything as still as possible for taking the shots. First time I've ever had to do that. Often I end up with a chair or a board that can span the window rests of the blind so that it works for an elbow rest. Shooting stick to the rescue so I could have taken neck shots.

Maybe next time I will, but for now it was heart/lung vitals area and most times they drop and are DRT with the caliber's I'm using the past 3 years. Looking to "upgrade" my 30-06 by replacing with one more suited for my needs than what my current one is setup to do. I've got one picked out and it already has pillar bedding in the stock so I will only have to do action bedding IF I have to do anything at all. I'll also get a rail on it so I can adjust the scope perfectly to my eye relief for instant in-scope sight picture when I go to look through :D

I'm rambling now. I could talk this kind of stuff all day :D
