what is smudge?

Just got a pepperoni salami kit from sausagemaker,reading the directions it said to add heavy smudge and smoke at a certain temp. What the heck is smudge??

Smudge=Smoky Fire or Smoky Smolder.

Rytek used that term frequently.

A smudge is a heavy smoke for like 10-20 mins....HEAVY
