Hi Alicia! Just curious why you decided on the Smoke Hollow? It is a good smoker but it sounds like he wants to do more lower temp smoking and the propane smokers are a little harder to do this. Have you thought about an electric smoker like the Masterbuilt Electric Smoker (MES). It is a very popular smoker that can be very versatile.

I have a propane and I love it but I have done a lot of mods to it to make it work the way I want.

I'm just thinking for jerky and salmon an MES might be a better choice.

Let us know your thoughts on the Smoke Hollow and I'm sure others will give you their advice too.

Alicia I don't know anything about the smoker you want to buy, but I do know he will need some other thermometers for smoking the thermometers that come  installed on smokers are often wrong, and the temperatures for both the inside temp of the smoker, as well as the internal temperatures of the meat are are very important to make good smoked foods a lot of folks use remote thermometers which monitor the smoker temps as well as the meat temp so  you don't over cook the meat a very popular one is the maverick et-732 which you can buy at http://www.amazenproducts.com/

Also the owner of smoking meat forums  Jeff Phillips has just released a smoking guide here is a link to a thread with information on the book

hope some of this info helps

His friend has a propane he swears by...I am just the wife I don't what to disappoint him.  I don't even know if I picked out the right  (good) smoker.  When he was looking at one last year it was propane....So, there lies my dilemma.  This unit looked to be able to do jerky and meat.

I am so lost tying to pull off this gift [emoji]9829[/emoji]

Thank you responding so quickly...
Hi S2K9K's
He is an mechanical engineer do you think he can learn to modify like you....Or does this take years to learn?

I didn't see anyone say anything about the AMZNPS or a Maverick 732...with the MES , he'll love you forever...and ever....and ever ...

Yes you don't want to disappoint him. If you aren't sure if that's the one he wants could you talk to his friend and see if he might know more?

Harry is right about the thermometer, I have a Maverick and next to my smoker it is the best tool I have, I couldn't live without it.

Jeff's book would be great too.

And if he wants to get into cold smoking, another good product from Amazen Products is the A-Maze-N Tube smoker. It provides perfect smoke for up to 6 hours and also works well hot smoking in a propane smoker.

The best tool would be to introduce him to this forum after he opens his gifts, the amount of knowledge on here is immeasurable.

The mods I made were actually pretty simple. The biggest one I made isn't necessary anymore since the Tube came out. I can maintain about 135* and up which works good for jerky, I've never smoked salmon.

What he said.....

However if you find out he is set on the Smoke Hollow, just substitute it in place of the Masterbuilt Electric Smoker (MES).

The next best thing as his gift, introduce him to this forum. He will learn so much it will make his head spin....

But be ready for him to try all kinds of new stuff....

To help clear up the smoke....
Masterbuilt Electric 40 = smoker
AMZNPS = smoke tube or smoke maze. Creates a small steady amount of smoke for long cooks or cold smoking

Maverick 732 = remote thermometers. Priceless!

S2K9K

I will buy the Maverick 732 ...But what kind of a smoker do you have?

JAJARCHEF

Will that work with Smoke Hollow Pro Series 44 or do I need to look at a different smoker.....

Thank you,

Alicia
