I have a Smoke Vault 24. I like the Smoke Vault for it's compact size and that it uses propane. It's taken away the hassle (for me) of attending to a wood smoker. From day one I had a problem hitting and maintaining 225 degrees for ribs. I did a boatload of mods (Smoke Vault Lessons Learned). After one final mod; putting a screw in every-other port on the burner, I had greater control over the flame height and was able to dependably hit the 225 degree range.
I'd like to start smoking sausage and bacon. From what I read it means hitting 120-150 degrees. I don't have much confidence I can do that with the Smoke Vault, given the challenges with flame height and not having the flame go out.
I have read the post by JC in GB (PID Controller Tutorial and Build Information) and I am intrigued by the idea of using a PID with the Smoke Vault (sans the propane
).
I am wondering if anyone has done a PID mod on a Smoke Vault, and whether the 1200W element mentioned in the post is enough to get the wood tray smoking?
